What actually happens during a hippotherapy session?

It’s not simply horse riding.

During hippotherapy, the movement of the horse is used as part of a structured therapy session, with activities chosen around the individual needs and goals of the person taking part.

A session may include:

🐴 Positioning and movement on the horse
🧠 Activities that encourage attention and participation
🗣️ Communication opportunities
🤲 Reaching, turning and interacting with objects
👀 Responding to instructions and the environment
💛 Building confidence and engagement through meaningful participation

Every session looks different because every person is different.

The horse is part of the therapeutic environment, but the focus remains on the person, their participation, and the goals being supported during the session.

Curious whether hippotherapy may be appropriate for your child or family member?

Teachers working with learners who have different access and communication needs already have enough on their plates.

Creating every accessible activity from scratch shouldn’t have to be another job.

JustBlink brings together educational games, language activities, learning resources and communication-focused content that can be used across different access methods.

And yes — content is available in Afrikaans and English.

The idea is simple:

Give educators more usable tools.

Give learners more opportunities to participate.

Educators and schools: message Speak2Me with “JUSTBLINK” to find out how the platform can fit into your classroom.

Communication support does not stop when an assessment is finished or a device is handed over.

For communication to become part of everyday life, the people surrounding the learner need to understand how to use and support it too.

That includes teachers, classroom assistants, therapists, carers and support staff.

Speak2Me provides training for schools and facilities to help teams understand communication systems, access methods and practical implementation.

Because the goal is not simply to have the technology available.

The goal is to make communication usable throughout the day.

Schools and facilities can contact Speak2Me to enquire about team training and implementation support.

Inclusion is more than being present in the same room.

It means having a way to:

✨ Express an opinion
✨ Ask a question
✨ Make a choice
✨ Join a conversation
✨ Say yes—or no
✨ Play and participate
✨ Be recognised as part of the group

At Speak2Me, communication is not treated as an optional extra. It is central to connection, autonomy and meaningful participation.

Are you concerned about someone’s communication or ability to access technology—but unsure what kind of support they need?

Speak2Me can help explore the person’s:

✨ Current ways of communicating
✨ Physical and access needs
✨ Daily environments
✨ Personal goals
✨ Available support systems
✨ Possible AAC or technology options

You do not need to arrive with all the answers. The first step is understanding the person and identifying a practical way forward.

Contact Speak2Me to begin the conversation.

Hippotherapy uses the movement of a horse as part of a structured therapy session.

With guidance from a trained professional, activities involving the horse may be incorporated into work on movement, positioning, interaction, communication and participation.

Each session should be shaped around the individual’s needs, abilities and therapeutic goals.

It is not simply horse riding—it is purposeful therapy supported by the unique movement and environment a horse provides.

A look towards a favourite object.

A smile when a song begins.

A movement that means “again.”

A symbol chosen from a board.

A message selected on a device.

Communication does not have to begin with sentences. Recognising and responding to small, meaningful actions helps create more opportunities for interaction, choice and connection.

Watch closely. Respond consistently. Give communication room to grow.
