Fibroids are more common than many women realise — and the symptoms can affect far more than just your period.

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. Some women have no symptoms at all, while others may experience heavy or prolonged periods, severe cramps, pelvic pressure, abdominal swelling, back pain, painful s*x, frequent urination, constipation, fatigue or difficulty falling pregnant.
There are different types of fibroids, including intramural, submucosal, subserosal and pedunculated fibroids. Their size, number and location can all influence the symptoms a woman experiences.
One of the most common signs is heavy menstrual bleeding. Over time, this may contribute to iron-deficiency anaemia, which can cause tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headaches and shortness of breath.
Fibroids can also affect the bladder, bowel and fertility. Large or multiple fibroids may make the abdomen appear bigger, while some fibroids can interfere with implantation or pregnancy depending on where they are located.
If you suspect fibroids, symptoms alone cannot confirm a diagnosis. A healthcare professional may recommend a pelvic examination and ultrasound, with further tests such as MRI or hysteroscopy where necessary.
Not every fibroid needs treatment. Some may simply be monitored, while others may require medication, minimally invasive procedures or surgery depending on symptoms, size, location and fertility plans.
Do not normalise persistent heavy bleeding, worsening pelvic pressure, abdominal swelling, painful s*x, frequent urination, unexplained constipation or severe fatigue.
Know your body. Pay attention to changes. Get checked when something does not feel normal.
