๐Ÿฉบ What is adrenal insufficiency?

Adrenal insufficiency occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough essential hormones, particularly cortisol. It can be classified as primary, secondary or tertiary adrenal insufficiency, with Addisonโ€™s disease being the most recognised form of primary adrenal insufficiency.

Symptoms can be subtle and may develop gradually. Common features include:

โ€ข Persistent fatigue
โ€ข Muscle weakness
โ€ข Loss of appetite or weight loss
โ€ข Abdominal pain
โ€ข Dizziness or low blood pressure
โ€ข Nausea or vomiting

Because these symptoms can overlap with other conditions, clinical assessment is important. Diagnosis may involve blood tests, including assessment of cortisol levels and, where appropriate, an ACTH stimulation test.

Early recognition and appropriate treatment can help patients manage this lifelong condition and reduce the risk of serious complications such as adrenal crisis.

โ˜• Could coffee be linked to a lower risk of breast cancer mortality?

A new study published in the British Journal of Nutrition has found an association between higher intake of polyphenols โ€” naturally occurring plant compounds with antioxidant properties โ€” and lower breast cancer-specific mortality.

Interestingly, coffee was the major contributor to polyphenol intake among participants in the study.

Polyphenols are also found in foods such as berries, cocoa, colourful vegetables, extra virgin olive oil, herbs, spices, legumes, nuts and seeds.

However, researchers and experts stress that these findings are encouraging but not conclusive. The study does not prove that drinking more coffee prevents breast cancer recurrence or extends survival, and further research in larger and more diverse populations is needed.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Do GLP-1 receptor agonists increase the risk of eye complications?

It's a question many clinicians are asking.

A recent international expert consensus, involving 58 specialists from 17 countries, concluded that worsening diabetic retinopathy is more closely associated with rapid improvements in blood glucose than with a direct effect of GLP-1 receptor agonists themselves. The panel agreed that the overall benefits of GLP-1RAs outweigh the potential ocular risks and that these medicines should remain accessible to appropriate patients.
