๐ฉบ What is adrenal insufficiency?
Adrenal insufficiency occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough essential hormones, particularly cortisol. It can be classified as primary, secondary or tertiary adrenal insufficiency, with Addisonโs disease being the most recognised form of primary adrenal insufficiency.
Symptoms can be subtle and may develop gradually. Common features include:
โข Persistent fatigue
โข Muscle weakness
โข Loss of appetite or weight loss
โข Abdominal pain
โข Dizziness or low blood pressure
โข Nausea or vomiting
Because these symptoms can overlap with other conditions, clinical assessment is important. Diagnosis may involve blood tests, including assessment of cortisol levels and, where appropriate, an ACTH stimulation test.
Early recognition and appropriate treatment can help patients manage this lifelong condition and reduce the risk of serious complications such as adrenal crisis.
