According to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), women should get a regular mammogram screening from the age of 40, or as advised by their doctor. A mammogram is important because it can detect breast cancer early, even before a lump is noticed. Early detection improves the chances of beating breast cancer and can mean simpler treatment choices. Breast Cancer Awareness.

Link pharmacies support patients during breast cancer chemotherapy by managing supportive medications, checking for dangerous drug interactions, and offering practical guidance regarding side effects.

Supportive care and managing side effects include:
• Anti-nausea regimens, and
• Pain and symptom relief
• Medication safety and coordination measures are:
• Drug interaction checks, including the screening of prescribed and OTC medication, vitamins, or herbal supplements that may conflict with chemotherapy,
• Oral chemotherapy management, ensuring that medication is adhered to, and taken at the right times, and
• Simplifying complex medication usage through pill boxes.

Pharmacists also collaborate with patients’ doctors and oncologists, creating a ‘circle of care’, and offer far more than dispensers of medication – as crucial as this function is.

They are important members of a multidisciplinary team treating a breast cancer patient. As independent community pharmacists, the chances are good the pharmacist has known the patient for years, if not decades, and the patient can talk freely to the pharmacist and share their journey, knowing they’ll be heard.
