I was walking back to the hotel after a long, full day at the World Federation of Occupational Therapists Congress when a man stood up from the foyer, shook my hand and introduced himself.

His name is Avuzwa Buqindlela. He’s an occupational therapist from South Africa.

He said he follows my work.

A few years ago, Avuzwa was on the brink of leaving occupational therapy to study medicine instead. Then he watched my film - Finding Me in OT. He shared that it helped him see the profession differently and reconnect with what was possible within OT.

He decided to pursue his OT career. And now he is in the process of starting his own private practice in an under-resourced community where there has been no occupational therapy service available.

That means people who previously had no access to OT soon will. Access to support, participation, dignity and possibility.

We talked about starting a practice with limited resources, leveraging relationships and referrals and beginning anyway.

What stayed with me most was the reminder of how impact travels in places we may never meet.

My work had a small part to play. An ember from my own inner fire that travelled far enough to spark someone else’s.

This is the power of putting passion-fuelled work into the world. You rarely see where the embers land. But sometimes, they ignite access, services and change in places that need it most.
