Needing more light to read is normal ageing. A curtain across your vision is not.

From your mid-forties, presbyopia makes near focus harder for almost everyone — that’s normal, and reading glasses handle it. But the same decades are when four sight-threatening conditions quietly become more common.
Cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy can all develop with little or no early warning — which is exactly why routine exams matter more than how your vision happens to feel on the day. The warning signs that need prompt attention: sudden vision loss, new distortion, a shadow or curtain, sudden floaters or flashes, eye pain, or a change in one eye only. Well-controlled blood sugar, blood pressure and not smoking protect your eyes too.

Bright light shouldn't hurt. When it does, your eyes are telling you something.

Light sensitivity — photophobia — can range from mild irritation to real discomfort, from sunlight and headlights to screens and ordinary indoor lighting.
Here's the surprising part: the retina has no pain receptors, yet its signals share a pathway with the nerve that carries sensation across your face. That's why bright light can trigger genuine discomfort — and why it's worth taking seriously rather than pushing through. Common causes include dry eye, inflammation inside the eye, corneal scratches and migraine. Most settle. But sudden, severe light sensitivity with eye pain, redness or reduced vision needs same-day attention.
If bright light has become a daily struggle, don't just reach for darker sunglasses — let's find the cause.

Your eye drops only work if they actually reach your eye. Most people lose half the dose.

Good technique isn't fussiness — it's what makes the treatment work.
Wash your hands, check you've got the right bottle, tilt your head back and place one drop into the pocket of the lower lid — without letting the tip touch your eye or lashes. Then the step almost nobody knows: gently press the inner corner of your eye for a minute and close your eyes softly rather than blinking. This keeps more medication where it's needed and reduces side effects. Using more than one drop? Leave a few minutes between them. Contact lenses usually come out first. And more drops than prescribed doesn't mean better results — just more irritation.

The smoothest eye appointments start before you arrive.

A specialist exam covers your vision, general health, medications and eye history — so the right information in hand helps your ophthalmologist see the full picture.

Bring your current glasses (even if they're not working well), any previous prescriptions or eye reports, your referral letter, and a list of your medications — including ones that seem unrelated to your eyes. Conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and thyroid disease all leave clues in the eye, and certain medications matter too. One more tip: if you're having dilating drops, your near vision will be blurry and light-sensitive for a few hours, so pack sunglasses and consider arranging a lift home.
Writing your questions down beforehand means nothing important gets forgotten in the moment.

When are glasses no longer enough?

It's natural to assume a stronger prescription will fix fading, glare-filled or duller vision. But your eyesight depends on far more than the strength of your lenses.

A refraction test measures how light focuses — it says very little about the health of the structures inside your eye. Cataracts, dry eye, corneal changes, macular conditions and even early glaucoma can all leave vision unclear long after your prescription has been perfectly corrected. That's why a noticeable difference between your two eyes, increasing glare or difficulty reading deserves a proper look — not just another lens change.

A comprehensive eye exam checks the pressure, the front of the eye, and the retina and optic nerve at the back — a picture a prescription alone simply can't give.

Seeing small specks or cobwebs drifting across your vision?

These are often floaters, and in many cases they are harmless. However, new floaters that appear suddenly — especially with flashes of light or a shadow across your vision — can signal a retinal tear or detachment and should be assessed urgently.

The simple rule: old floaters are usually annoying; new floaters can be urgent.

Many people only book an eye exam when their vision changes — but some eye conditions do not cause symptoms in the early stages.

Routine eye examinations can help detect problems such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, cataracts, and macular degeneration before they have a serious impact on vision and quality of life.

Dr Johann Snyman’s latest article explains when to have your eyes checked at every stage of life, from childhood through to 65 and beyond. Read the full article on our website: https://drjohannsnyman.co.za/how-often-should-you-have-an-eye-exam-a-guide-by-age/

Glaucoma treatment is not only about eye drops anymore.

For some patients, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, known as MIGS, may offer a way to improve eye pressure control and reduce the burden of daily medication — particularly when performed together with cataract surgery.

MIGS does not cure glaucoma, and it is not right for everyone, but it has created an important middle ground between drops, laser treatment, and more invasive surgery.

Read the full article on our website to understand whether MIGS may be worth discussing at your next glaucoma appointment: https://drjohannsnyman.co.za/what-is-migs-the-new-way-to-treat-glaucoma/

Not every eye problem is an emergency — but some symptoms need urgent care.

If you experience sudden loss of vision, flashes and new floaters, a shadow or curtain in your vision, severe eye pain, chemical exposure, an eye injury, or sudden double vision, it is important to act quickly.

Waiting a few days can make a serious condition harder to treat and may increase the risk of permanent vision loss.
