HAPPY YOUTH DAY! 16 JUNE 2026
"The youth are the balance of our country." – Nelson Mandela
On 16 June 1976, young South Africans marched for education and a better future. They were met with bullets. Their sacrifice birthed a movement that changed our nation forever.
Fifty years later, their legacy lives on, but so do the challenges.
Young South Africans Face:
• Depression & anxiety up 40% in the past decade
• Drug use rising among teenagers
• Diabetes & hypertension appearing in younger ages
• HIV still high among young people
• Only 14% of South Africans have medical aid
Health is the foundation of opportunity. Without health, young people can't complete school, find work, or build the future they deserve.
SAMDP Is Committed to Youth Health:
• We offer FREE membership to all medical and dental students
• We're advocating for youth health services and prevention programmes
• We're challenging stigma around mental health and addiction
