Strong bodies build strong learners! 💪

Postural control is the foundation for sitting, writing, concentrating and playing with confidence.

Movement is often the first step to learning. 💙

Before we expect children to sit, focus, write, cut, or complete table-top tasks, their nervous system needs to be ready.

In this session, we’re warming up by using a combination of:
🌀 Vestibular input (movement)
💪 Proprioceptive input (heavy work)
✋ Tactile input (touch)

These sensory experiences help prepare the body for:
✔️ Focus and attention
✔️ Learning readiness
✔️ Readiness for Core strength, Postural control and Fine motor exercises that are a large part of our sessions
✔️ Successful participation in table-top activities

For many children, movement is not a reward after work is done—it is the foundation that makes learning possible.

Understand the Difference ☝🏻

Developmental OT vs Sensory Integration OT

Many parents are surprised to learn that not all Occupational Therapists focus on exactly the same areas. While there is often overlap, Developmental OTs and Sensory Integration (SI) OTs have different areas of expertise.

Developmental Occupational Therapy focuses on helping children develop the skills they need to participate successfully at home and at school. This may include:

• School readiness
• Fine motor skills
• Handwriting
• Scissor skills
• Gross motor skills
• Visual perceptual skills
• Concentration and task completion
• Learning and scholastic skills
• ADHD support
• Confidence and independence

🏫 Mainstream Schools are most commonly served by Developmental OTs. The OT’s role is usually to help children access the curriculum and function successfully in the classroom.

Sensory Integration Occupational Therapy focuses on how the brain receives, processes and responds to sensory information. SI OTs often assist children who experience:

• Significant sensory processing difficulties
• Severe sensory sensitivities (sound, touch, movement, etc.)
• Severe sensory seeking behaviours
• Emotional regulation difficulties linked to sensory needs
• Autism Spectrum Disorder
• Complex sensory-motor challenges

🌈 Special Needs Schools / Autism Schools
More likely to have Sensory Integration (SI) OTs. Here the focus extends beyond academic participation to helping children regulate, process sensory information and participate meaningfully in everyday activities.

These two OTs often work hand-in-hand.

The goal is never to fit a child into a category—it is to ensure they receive the right support, at the right time, from the right professional.

Through play, movement and connection, we work on so much more than “just playing.”
In this session we targeted important developmental foundations such as:
• Attention and focus
• Core strength and postural control
• Motor planning and coordination
• Fine motor readiness and shoulder stability
• Sensory regulation
• Visual Perceptual skills
• Confidence and task completion

For preschoolers, learning happens best when their bodies feel regulated, engaged and safe 💛

Every obstacle course, swing, puzzle and game has a purpose — because strong developmental foundations help children thrive at school, at home and in everyday life.

Busy carpet time? A weighted lap pad might be the game changer your child needs ✨

Many children who struggle to sit still on the carpet are not being “naughty” or “difficult” — their bodies are often craving more sensory input and support.

A weighted lap pad provides deep pressure input to the body, which can help the nervous system feel calmer, more organised and grounded. Think of it like a comforting “body hug” while sitting.

Why OT’s love weighted lap pads:
• Helps the body feel more settled during carpet time
• Can improve focus and listening
• Supports better body awareness and posture
• Reduces fidgeting and constant movement
• Gives calming proprioceptive input to the nervous system
• Helps children stay engaged for longer periods

Weighted lap pads are especially helpful for children who:
• Constantly wiggle or leave the carpet
• Struggle to focus during circle time
• Seek movement all day long
• Lean, crash or touch others frequently
• Battle with regulation and attention

Important:
A weighted lap pad should always be used under adult supervision and as part of a child’s individual sensory needs. What works for one child may not work for another 💛

Sometimes a calmer body leads to a calmer brain — and learning becomes so much easier.
