We are conditioned to think about menopause as the beginning of the end.

Science tells a different story.

Somewhere in midlife, often earlier than we expect, many women arrive at a fork in the road. One path is familiar. It is shaped by the messages we have absorbed for decades: expect less, become less, prepare for decline. Invisibility creeps in.

The other path is spoken about far less.Menopause was one of the places where society projected its fears about ageing onto women. Yet when we look beyond the stereotypes, a different picture emerges.

Crystallised intelligence — the judgement, insight and pattern recognition accumulated over a lifetime — continues to grow well into later life. Some of our most valuable cognitive capacities deepen in midlife. I call this the wisdom of experience - embodied by calm, a level of certainty and the ability manage change - differently.

What we believe about ageing matters too. In one long-running study, people with more positive perceptions of ageing lived, on average, seven and a half years longer than those with more negative perceptions. The stories we carry about ourselves may shape the way we move through life. I have seen this in my own life and through my coaching and clinical clients.

I sit across from women every week, some of whom are convinced that their best years are behind them. Yet none are. What many are experiencing is the uncertainty of a transition. The body is changing. Identity is shifting. Old assumptions no longer fit. There is turbulence in that process, which is informed by deep metabolic, neurological and hormonal change.

On the other side, I have witnessed in myself and others - something remarkable: greater clarity, deeper self-trust, stronger boundaries and a renewed sense of purpose.

The road ahead is determined by a belief, a mindset, and action, together with trusted medical partners and evidence-based medicine.

Which road will make all the difference?
