Wound Well Wisdom: When (and When NOT) to Use Gauze

Gauze is often the go-to for wound dressing — but did you know it’s not always the best choice?

✅ Gauze is useful for:

- Cleaning wounds before applying dressings

- Packing deep wounds (when used correctly and removed safely)

- Temporary coverage in low-exudate wounds

- Covering a wound in emergencies or when resources are limited

⚠️ Gauze may cause problems if:

- Used dry on a wound — it can stick and damage healing
tissue

- It’s left in too long and dries out, making removal painful

- It doesn’t control moisture — leading to maceration or
dryness

- It’s not secured properly, causing friction or contamination

👩‍⚕️ Wound Well Tip:
Think of gauze as your basic tool, not your best one. For optimal healing, we often need advanced dressings that manage moisture, bacteria, and healing time.

Is My Wound Healable?

Not all wounds heal the same way — and that’s okay. But knowing whether your wound can heal helps us give you the right care.

✅ Signs Your Wound Can Heal (Healable):

- You have good blood flow to the area

- The cause of the wound is treatable (like pressure, poor circulation, diabetes)

- Your wound is getting smaller over time

- You see red, bumpy tissue (called granulation tissue)

- There’s no major infection or it’s being treated

⚠️ Sometimes, a wound is not healable if:

- There's severely poor circulation

- The wound doesn’t improve, even with treatment

- The body is struggling due to chronic illness, poor nutrition, or end-of-life care

At Wound Well, we always ask:
Is it healable, maintenance, or palliative care? This helps us create the best plan for you.

👩‍⚕️ Your next step?
Book a professional wound assessment. We’ll help you understand your wound and what’s possible.

Cancer & Wounds: Understanding Fungating Wounds 🎗️

Some cancers can cause open wounds on the skin known as fungating wounds — these can be distressing, but they are manageable with the right care.

🧠 What is a fungating wound?
A fungating wound develops when cancer cells grow near or through the skin, breaking it down. These wounds can appear raised, ulcerated, and may bleed, drain, or smell.

📍 Common with advanced:
🔸 Breast cancer
🔸 Head & neck cancers
🔸 Skin cancers
🔸 Certain abdominal or pelvic cancers

What symptoms can occur?
✔️ Bleeding or raw, fragile skin
✔️ Strong odour
✔️ Pain or itching
✔️ Heavy discharge or fluid
✔️ Emotional distress

How wound care can help:
✔️ Odour control (e.g. charcoal dressings)
✔️ Moisture management (absorbent dressings)
✔️ Bleeding control (gentle, non-adherent options)
✔️ Pain relief — topical and systemic
✔️ Dignity and comfort-focused care

Fungating wounds do not define you. Holistic care — physical, emotional, and spiritual — can greatly improve comfort and quality of life.

If you or a loved one is struggling with a cancer-related wound, professional wound care support can make a powerful difference.

Caring for External Fixators at Home: What You Need to Know

External fixation devices are used to stabilize bones after surgery or trauma. Proper pin site care is essential to prevent infection and support healing.

Daily Pin Site Care:
✔️ Wash your hands before and after touching the area
✔️ Clean pin sites daily or as advised by your nurse/doctor
✔️ Use saline or prescribed antiseptic to gently clean each site
✔️ Remove any crusts or dried fluid — bacteria can hide
underneath
✔️ Apply non-stick gauze or sterile dressing if needed

🚩 Watch for signs of infection:
🔴 Redness, swelling, or warmth
💧 Yellow or green discharge
🔥 Increased pain or odour
🌡️ Fever or feeling unwell

📞 Contact your healthcare provider if you notice any of these signs.

💡 Extra Tips:
🔸 Keep the fixator dry when showering (use a waterproof
cover)
🔸 Never twist or loosen the fixator parts yourself
🔸 Wear loose, comfortable clothing around the device
🔸 Avoid bumping or knocking the frame

📍 With clean care and early attention to warning signs, you can prevent complications and support a smooth recovery.

Charcoal Dressings: Odour Control & Healing Support 🖤

Some wounds come with unpleasant odours — but charcoal dressings are here to help.

💡 What is a charcoal dressing?
Charcoal dressings are wound pads infused with activated charcoal, known for its ability to trap bacteria, toxins, and smells.

🩹 Why do we use them?
✔️ Absorbs wound odour — especially in infected or draining
wounds
✔️ Binds bacteria & toxins in the wound bed
✔️ Keeps wound dry by managing exudate (fluid)
✔️ Improves patient comfort & confidence

🔍 Best for:
🔸 Infected wounds
🔸 Malodorous ulcers
🔸 Fungating or cancer-related wounds
🔸 Chronic wounds with heavy drainage

✅ Key points:
🔸 Used with or under other dressings
🔸 Not painful — and helps with smell fast
🔸 Doesn’t treat infection but supports comfort while healing
continues

📍 If you’re struggling with wound odour, ask your wound care nurse if a charcoal dressing is right for you.

Understanding Lymphedema: When Fluid Doesn’t Flow 💧

Lymphedema is a chronic condition where lymphatic fluid builds up in the body’s tissues, causing swelling — often in the arms, legs, or feet.

🩵 What is lymph?
Lymph is a clear fluid that carries immune cells and waste through your lymphatic system. When this system gets damaged or blocked, the fluid can’t drain properly.

🧠 Causes of lymphedema:
🔹 Surgery or radiation (especially for cancer)
🔹 Infection or trauma to lymph nodes
🔹 Congenital (born with poorly formed lymph vessels)
🔹 Chronic venous insufficiency or obesity

🔍 Signs to watch for:
✔️ Swelling (usually one limb)
✔️ Heaviness or tightness in the limb
✔️ Thickened, hard skin (fibrosis)
✔️ Aching, discomfort, or reduced mobility
✔️ Repeated infections or skin changes

🩹 Why it matters in wound care:
- Lymphedema increases the risk of chronic wounds, cellulitis, and delayed healing.
- Managing swelling helps improve circulation and tissue oxygen — essential for healing.

💡 Management includes:
✔️ Compression therapy
✔️ Manual lymph drainage (MLD)
✔️ Skincare & wound care
✔️ Exercise & movement
✔️ Healthy weight & hydration

📍 Early treatment prevents complications and improves quality of life. If you're noticing persistent swelling, talk to your healthcare provider!

Podiatry & Wound Care: A Vital Step in Healing 👣

Podiatrists are foot and ankle specialists — and they play a critical role in preventing and treating foot wounds, especially for diabetic patients.

🦶 What does a podiatrist do in wound care?
✔️ Assesses foot structure & pressure points
✔️ Treats calluses & corns that can lead to ulcers
✔️ Trims thick or infected toenails safely
✔️ Offloads pressure using orthotics or custom footwear
✔️ Supports early detection of ulcers, infections, and
circulatory problems
✔️ Works with wound care nurses for full-circle treatment

💡 Ideal for patients with:
🔸 Diabetes
🔸 Recurring foot ulcers
🔸 Thickened or fungal nails
🔸 Foot deformities or poor circulation
🔸 Neuropathy (numbness or tingling in feet)

📍 Good foot care is key to preventing serious complications. Regular podiatry visits + expert wound care = better outcomes and fewer amputations.
