In the next 15 minutes somewhere in the world, 15 people will lose their lives to su***de. Each year, around 726,000 people die by su***de, with even more attempting it. The impact of each loss extends beyond individuals, affecting families, communities, and entire nations, with lasting consequences for those left behind. Su***de affects all ages and, in 2021, was the third leading cause of death among 15- to 29-year-olds globally.
Let's be mindful and compassionate when discussing mental health. Some key points to remember:
- Try not to assume you can know how another is feeling.
- Ask questions like "describe to me how you are feeling at the moment."
- Use dialogue where you can, seek to listen and understand.
- Try to put yourself in the shoes of the other person who is going through a tough time.
- Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Breaking the stigma that men do not need help is crucial.
Let's work together to create a supportive environment where conversations around mental health are encouraged and stigma is eliminated.
