Dr Liezl du Plessis, Paediatric Oncologist at Life Groenkloof Hospital, has a special interest in teens with cancer.

“Unlike adult cancers, cancer in the youth is not strongly linked to lifestyle and environmental risk factors. The type of cancer and treatment approach also differ from adults. Children and teens are often diagnosed with embryonal cancers - which are fast growing, malignant tumors that develop from primitive cells left over from fetal or embryonic development. Being fast growing makes the tumor sensitive to chemotherapy, that we as children's oncologists can use to our advantage. Early diagnosis of these tumors are crucial to make treatment less toxic and improve long term survival."" – Dr du Plessis.

Dr du Plessis is passionate about caring for teenagers with cancer, supporting them and their families every step of the way throughout their cancer journey.

If any concerns regarding your child or teen’s health, contact Life Groenkloof Hospital on 012 424 3600 or visit https://bit.ly/3PKFbcw for further information on our paediatric oncology services.

By wearing a gold ribbon, supporting a child cancer foundation, or creating awareness that cancers do occur in children, albeit rare. The signs and symptoms may be subtle at first and easily be mistaken for more common illnesses.

If symptoms persist, such as fever, tiredness, weight loss, lumps, bumps and bone pain, do seek help. Get a second opinion if symptoms persist or worsen. Most doctors will only see a handful of cases during their career and may not consider such a serious diagnosis. Children oncologists do not need proof of a cancer before discussing or consulting a child or teen with concerning symptoms. In fact, we prefer to be part of the work-up to prevent treatment delays and unnecessary tests.

Importantly, cancer in children is for the most part treatable. The majority of our patients survive. World-wide, because of high survival rates, scientists and researchers are continuously finding ways to make therapies less toxic.

At Life Groenkloof Hospital, Dr Liezl du Plessis, a paediatric oncologist, has a passion to treat teens with cancer and to walk the path with them and their families.

If any concerns regarding your child or teen’s health, contact Life Groenkloof Hospital on 012 424 3600 or visit https://bit.ly/3PKFbcw for further information on our paediatric oncology services.

Not sure where to start if you're concerned about your child's development?

Children may need different types of support at different stages of development. Hear directly from occupational, speech and play therapists as they explain their roles and how they may support children in different ways.

If you have any concerns about your child’s development, a GP or paediatrician can help assess your child and guide the most appropriate support pathway.

Download our infographic for a simple guide to three different therapies and how they may support your child’s development.
