The marathon may be over. Our mission isn’t.

The ASH Mandela Surgical Marathon has come to an end, but the reality is that the need for elective surgeries never stops.

Every day, patients continue to wait. Families continue to hope. Lives remain on hold while they wait for access to specialist surgical care.

That’s why African Synergy Health isn’t stopping here.

We will continue to work with hospitals, specialist surgeons, healthcare professionals, corporate partners and communities to restore access to life-changing surgery and move closer to our vision of Zero Waiting Lists.

Every step we took together proved one thing when a community unites behind a shared purpose, lives can be changed.

The ASH Long Walk to Healthcare Freedom was more than a walk it was a declaration that no one should have to wait for the specialist surgical care they deserve.

To every walker, volunteer, healthcare professional, sponsor and partner who stood with us, thank you. Your presence gave strength to a movement that continues to restore hope, one patient at a time.

While this year’s walk has come to an end, our mission continues. The need for elective surgery doesn’t stop, and neither will our commitment to achieving Zero Waiting Lists.

As we reflect on what we’ve accomplished together, we’re already looking ahead.

We can’t wait to join hands with you again next year to walk further, reach more people, and create an even greater impact.

Every milestone is a reminder of why we started.

At the 2 km Milestone Opportunity Activation, Dr. Majake reflected on the significance of every step taken not just along the route, but towards a future where quality healthcare is accessible to all.

His message reinforced the heart of the movement: when communities, healthcare professionals and partners unite around a shared purpose, meaningful change becomes possible.

The 2 km milestone wasn’t just another stop on the walk it was a celebration of progress, partnership and the collective commitment to restoring access to specialist surgical care across South Africa.

221 patients. One mission. Zero waiting lists.

From 1 July to 31 July 2026, the ASH Mandela Surgical Marathon set out with an ambitious goal: 200 patients. We believed that by bringing together specialist surgeons, hospitals, healthcare professionals, volunteers and partners, we could make a meaningful impact.

Together, we didn’t just meet that target we surpassed it.

221 patients received life-changing specialist surgical care in just 31 days.

That’s 21 more lives transformed, 21 more families given hope, and 21 more people who no longer have to wait for the specialist care they deserve.

Across 6 provinces, 14 hospitals and 23 surgical days, this achievement demonstrates what is possible when collective action is driven by purpose.

This milestone is about more than exceeding a number. It is another step towards our vision of eliminating surgical waiting lists and ensuring that every patient has timely access to quality specialist care.

Our mission remains unchanged:
Zero waiting lists. Accessible specialist surgical care. A healthier Africa.

The journey doesn’t end here. This is proof that together, we can restore access to surgical care one patient, one hospital and one province at a time.

In the operating theatre at Rob Ferreira Hospital, lives were being changed and knowledge was being shared.

As Dr. Mashava, Dr. Jeremy, and Dr. Viola Morolo worked side by side, the theatre became more than a place where surgery was performed. It became a space where experience, insight and collaboration flowed naturally in pursuit of one shared goal: delivering the best possible care for every patient.

A movement is built long before the first step is taken.

It begins with people showing up for one another.

It begins with volunteers giving their time, participants arriving with open hearts, conversations between strangers, names being written down, shirts being handed out, and quiet acts of service that often go unnoticed.

These moments remind us that Healthcare Freedom is not only about changing a healthcare system it is about building a community that refuses to accept that anyone should wait alone.

On Saturday, we didn’t just prepare for a walk. We prepared to stand with every patient, every family and every healthcare worker committed to a future where access to life-changing surgery is no longer a privilege, but a reality.

This is what community looks like.
This is what purpose looks like.
This is what the ASH movement is all about.

On Saturday, 131 people came together to take a stand for Healthcare Freedom.

Every step taken represented hope for those still waiting, support for those living with uncertainty, and a shared commitment to a future where no South African is left waiting for life-changing surgery.

To every participant, volunteer, healthcare professional, partner and supporter thank you. Your presence transformed a walk into a movement and reminded us that meaningful change begins when people choose to act together.

This was more than a number. It was 131 voices united, 131 hearts committed, and 131 reasons to believe that Healthcare Freedom is possible.

The journey has only just begun.

At the 1 KM Milestone, the journey paused but the message grew stronger.

Professor Nicholas Crisp challenged us to confront the reality of vulnerability. He reminded us that behind every surgical waiting list is a person, a family and a story waiting for hope.

The first kilometer of the ASH Long Walk was not simply about distance it was about recognizing the uncertainty, fear and resilience experienced by those who wait for life-changing care. It was a call to move beyond awareness and into action.

Healthcare Freedom will not be achieved by one institution or one profession alone. It will be achieved when all of us choose to walk together, speak together and act together.

Thank you, Professor Nicholas Crisp, for inspiring us to take the first step with purpose and reminding us that every step forward is a step towards a South Africa where no patient is left waiting.
