Spring is a good time to check in with your body.

Know your normal. If something feels different — a lump, a change in shape, skin, or ni**le — a conversation can bring clarity.

You do not need to wait for a scare.
Early checks often mean more options and greater peace of mind.

Many people think breast surgeons also handle chemotherapy and radiation — but they don’t.
Those treatments are managed by medical and radiation oncologists.
An oncological breast surgeon focuses on the surgical side of care:

▪️Assess the patient after imaging and biopsy.
▪️ Discuss surgical options.
▪️ Perform the operation.
▪️Work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
▪️Follow the patient after surgery and coordinate further care.

Their goal is clear: remove the cancer while protecting appearance and quality of life.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in South African women.

About 1 in 28 women will be diagnosed in their lifetime.

Early checks matter — most women diagnosed have no family history.

The question is not “How much can we remove?”
It is “What do you actually need?”

For many women with early-stage breast cancer, breast-conserving surgery (with radiotherapy if needed) can offer the same long-term survival as mastectomy.

The right operation depends on your tumor, your body, and your priorities — including appearance and identity.

That decision is made with you, not for you.

For many women with early-stage breast cancer, the answer is no.

When you are a suitable candidate, keeping the breast (and adding radiotherapy if needed) can offer the same long-term survival as mastectomy.

The right operation depends on your tumor, your body, and your priorities — including appearance and identity.

That decision is made with you, not for you.

If you’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer, you may be wondering:
“Will I need a mastectomy, or can the cancer be removed while keeping my breast?”

The answer depends on your individual situation.

Factors considered may include:
• The size and position of the cancer
• How much of the breast is affected
• Whether the cancer is in one area or more than one area
• Whether the cancer can be safely removed while leaving healthy breast tissue behind
• Your previous medical history
• Your personal preferences and treatment goals

For some patients, breast-conserving surgery may be an option, where the cancer is removed while preserving as much of the breast as possible.

For others, a mastectomy — removing the entire breast — may be the safest or most appropriate choice.

There is no “better” operation for every patient. The right approach depends on your cancer and your individual circumstances.

Understanding your options can help you feel more informed and confident when making decisions about your treatment.
