Surface-applied urea may lose nitrogen under several field conditions. Managing this risk requires more than looking at the product alone—placement, moisture, application timing and prevailing conditions should be considered together.

Did you know that water demand and orchard sensitivity increase around macadamia flowering and nut set?

During this critical transition, irrigation uniformity and regular monitoring deserve particular attention. Uneven water distribution or moisture stress can affect nutrient availability, nutrient uptake and the orchard’s ability to support successful nut set.

However, the “South African macadamia season” is too broad to guide a technical recommendation on its own.

Conditions can differ considerably according to:

• Production area and altitude

• Cultivar and actual crop stage

• Soil characteristics and orchard history

• Irrigation or rainfall system

• Water availability and distribution

• Realistic yield objective

Early October generally marks the transition from late flowering and pollination into early nut set in Lowveld macadamia orchards.

However, phenology does not always follow the calendar precisely. Cultivar, altitude, temperature, water availability and orchard conditions can all influence how quickly a block progresses.

Even within the same orchard, flowering and nut set may overlap.

Before making the next nutrition decision, confirm five key factors:

1. The flowering-to-nut-set stage
Confirm what is happening across the orchard—not only what the calendar predicts.

2. Representative soil or tissue evidence
Use correctly collected samples and current analytical results to identify nutrient availability, imbalances or potential deficiencies.

3. Water status
Assess soil moisture, crop stress and irrigation-water quality. Adequate water availability is particularly important during flowering and nut set.

4. Field history
Review previous applications, analytical results, yield performance, visible symptoms and management practices.

5. A realistic yield objective
Align the nutrition programme with the orchard’s age, condition, production history and attainable yield potential.

The calendar provides a planning window—not a diagnosis.

Crop production is only as strong as its most limiting nutrient.

A fertilizer program may supply adequate nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, but an imbalance or deficiency in a secondary or micronutrient can still restrict crop performance.

The consequences may include:
▪️A wider gap between actual and potential yield
▪️ Reduced grain quality
▪️Lower nutrient and water-use efficiency
▪️Greater vulnerability to plant pathogens
▪️Increased susceptibility to abiotic stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation

With micronutrients, supplying the correct element is only part of the solution.

Effective micronutrient nutrition also depends on:
