đź’ˇ At just 16 years old, South African student Bohlale Mphahlele was already thinking about how technology could make people safer.
She developed a prototype known as an “Alerting Earpiece”—a discreet wearable device designed to function as a personal safety tool.
📸 The concept includes a tiny camera capable of capturing images during a dangerous situation. The device was also designed to transmit the wearer’s location and send an emergency alert to designated contacts and emergency services.
🚨 The idea is especially remarkable because it aims to provide a way to call for help without requiring someone to reach for a phone during an emergency.
Bohlale’s project gained recognition at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, where she received a bronze medal for her innovation.
One important clarification: the viral claim that the earring “alerts the police in seconds” makes the invention sound like a fully deployed commercial product. It was reported as a prototype/project, so its capabilities should not be presented as a proven, widely available emergency system.
Still, the story is a powerful example of a young inventor using technology to tackle a very real problem: personal safety. 🌍💡
