Kamuchanga District Hospital, through the Nutrition Department, conducted World Breastfeeding Week Awareness on 5th August 2026. World Breastfeeding Week is observed globally every year in the month of August to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding practices for the health and wellbeing of mothers and children.

OBJECTIVES OF THE ACTIVITY

The objectives of the commemoration were to:
1. Raise awareness on the importance and benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life.
2. Educate mothers, caregivers, and the community on proper breastfeeding techniques and nutrition during lactation.
3. Promote continued breastfeeding up to 2 years and beyond, alongside complementary feeding.
4. Engage both facility-based and community members in supporting breastfeeding mothers.

ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED

The awareness activities were conducted in both facility and community settings to ensure wide reach.

A. Facility-Based Activities

Health education and sensitization sessions were conducted at:
1. *Maternity Ward*: Antenatal and postnatal mothers were counseled on the benefits of initiating breastfeeding within the first hour of birth, exclusive breastfeeding, and breast care.
2. *Children’s Ward*: Caregivers of admitted children were educated on continued breastfeeding during illness and the role of breast milk in child recovery and immunity.

During these sessions, mothers were given demonstrations on correct positioning and attachment, and their questions regarding common breastfeeding challenges were addressed by Nutrition and Nursing staff.

B. Community-Based Activity

An outreach awareness program was also conducted at the *Market*. Marketeers and community members were sensitized on the importance of supporting breastfeeding mothers in public spaces and workplaces. Key messages shared included the economic benefits of breastfeeding and the need to create breastfeeding-friendly environments in the community.

KEY MESSAGES DELIVERED

1. Breast milk is the first and best food for infants.
2. Exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months protects babies from infections and promotes healthy growth.
3. Breastfeeding benefits both the mother and the baby.
4. Family and community support is essential for successful breastfeeding.

PARTICIPANTS

The activity targeted antenatal and postnatal mothers, caregivers in the Children’s Ward, health workers, and members of the general public at the market. Staff from the Nutrition Department, Maternity, and Children’s Ward facilitated the sessions.

CHALLENGES NOTED

1. Some mothers still hold misconceptions about exclusive breastfeeding.
2. Limited IEC materials for distribution to the community.

RECOMMENDATIONS

1. Continuous community and facility sensitization on breastfeeding throughout the year, not only in August.
2. Provision of adequate IEC materials such as posters, pamphlets, and flip charts.
3. Strengthen workplace and community support systems for breastfeeding mothers.

CONCLUSION

The World Breastfeeding Week commemoration at Kamuchanga District Hospital was successfully conducted. The activity achieved its objective of raising awareness and educating mothers and the community on the importance of breastfeeding. Continued efforts are needed to sustain optimal breastfeeding practices in the district.
