In Zambia, there are a lot of myths and misconceptions regarding strabismus (squint). Many people suffer silently because they believe that nothing can be done to correct their condition. Some studies have shown that children with strabismus have higher odds of having anxiety, depression, bipolar disease, and schizophrenia than those without eye diseases.

A 24 year old lady of Lusaka Zambia presented to the University Teaching Hospitals Eye Hospital with a history of outward deviation of her left eye noted since the age of 3 years. She had a large angle exotropia. She was counselled about her condition and advised surgery. Though initially hesitant about the surgery, she
consented. Surgery was done with very good outcome.

Remember strabismus can be corrected. Visit your nearest Eye Hospital for assessment!

Did you know?

The Chainama College of Health Sciences was the first institution in Zambia to train eye health personnel.

In 2006, a programme was created to train ophthalmic clinical officers and Ophthalmic nurses. Previously, most eye personnel underwent training in East Africa and west Africa. To date, many of the graduates have gone to serve in the remotest parts of Zambia championing the integration of eye health services in the wider health system.

This training programme has expanded with the opening of the Levy Mwanawasa Medical University now training almost a thousand eye health personnel in various categories.

Today is world sight day and we celebrate this day with the many eye health personnel in Zambia that her tirelessly working to ensure that no one loses sight from Avoidable causes.

Meet Sr Monde, a dedicated Nurse championing community eye health in Zambia. Monde believes that public health interventions have potential in alleviating the many sight threatening conditions in zambia and thus she has been instrumental in promoting activities that enables communities to be empowered with the necessary tools they need to prevent sight loss.

Today marks another important milestone in the advancement of eye health in Zambia as we welcome Dr Chimozi Tembo who is now a fellow of pediatrics, strabismus and NeuroOphthalmology.

Dr Tembo is a prolific eye health expert with a medical career spanning over a decade. He has served Zambia diligently both in rural and urban settings.

Growing up in the mining town of Luanshya, Dr Tembo had only one dream of one day contributing to the welfare of humanity. Having completed his medical training from the University of Zambia and subsequently his internship, he went further and did his rural posting in Katete at St Francis Mission Hospital were he served in various portfolios.

Seeing the devastating effects that losing sight posed on society he embarked on a quest to pursue a rare skill aimed at restoring sight, a journey he has so passionately followed performing countless sight saving procedures.

His passion for the welfare of children led him to pursue a long term fellowship in Peadiatrics , strabismus and NeuroOphthalmology at the prestigious LV prassad Eye Institute in India. He becomes one of the few Zambians with this qualification.

We would like to congratulate Dr Tembo and wish him the very best even as he continues serving mother Zambia.

Today 22nd September 2023, the Kenneth Kaunda international Airport has received a new visitor this time not an ordinary passenger airline but a flying eye hospital by orbis international.

This extraordinary aircraft boasts of a state-of-the-art medical teaching facility with an operating room, classroom, and recovery room.

The next three weeks will see top notch eye doctors and nurses from around the world interact with Zambian eye professionals sharing vast cutting edge knowledge and skills aimed at alleviating eye ailments.

Eye health professionals from around Zambia will build and reinforce their eye care skills through a supportive, carefully crafted training curriculum.

The Zambia national eye coordinator Dr Phyllis Moonga will lead the highly talented team of Zambian eye personnel in this momentous event.

Eye health Zambia will give you updates on a number of activities scheduled in these three weeks.

Eye Health Zambia wishes to congratulate four Zambian ophthalmologists who graduated from the University of Zambia School of Medicine with Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology.
The four are Dr Everisto Banda, Dr Nelson Lombe, Dr Manyando Musiwa and Dr Mulubwa Serenje.
