NUTRITIONIST CONCERNED OVER AMOUNT OF SUGAR PUT IN PRODUCTS
Nutritionist, Belinda Tembo, has urged relevant regulatory authorities to consider regulating the amount of sugar used in food and other products, warning that excessive sugar consumption poses a serious risk to public health.
Mrs. Tembo says the high levels of sugar contained in some products are contributing to the growing burden of non-communicable diseases, with children increasingly becoming vulnerable to conditions associated with unhealthy diets.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mrs. Tembo expressed concern that it is becoming increasingly difficult for consumers to make healthy choices, as many of the products available on the market contain high amounts of sugar.
βThere is already an ongoing dialogue through the National Food and Nutrition Commission aimed at engaging the private sector on the amount of sugar used in food productsβ, said Mrs. Tembo.
She said that such discussions are important in finding ways of reducing sugar levels in products while promoting healthier options for consumers.
Mrs. Tembo says failure to address the issue could have serious consequences for the health of future generations.
She has therefore called on the relevant authorities to take decisive action by strengthening measures aimed at controlling excessive sugar consumption and encouraging manufacturers to produce healthier products.
