LETS DISCUSS SPINAL CORD INJURIES
Spinal Cord
The spinal cord is like a complex network of highways, transmitting vital messages between the brain and the rest of the body. But what happens when this highway gets damaged?
A spinal cord injury (SCI) is damage to the spinal cord that results in loss of function, sensation(inability to feel anything when touched), or mobility(failing to move).
This damage can be caused by trauma, disease, or other conditions, and can affect various aspects of a person's life, including bodily functions.
CAUSES OF SPINAL CORD INJURIES: T
1. TRAUMATIC CAUSES:
- Motor vehicle accidents (the ultimate party crasher! 🚗)
- Falls (whoops, watch your step! )
- Sports injuries (ouch, that tackle was rough! 🏑)
- Violence (gunshots, stabbings, etc. 🔫)
2. NON TRAUMATIC CAUSES:
- Tumors (uninvited guests in the body)
- Infections (like tuberculosis or meningitis )
- Degenerative diseases (wear and tear, oh dear )
- Autoimmune conditions (like multiple sclerosis )
TYPES OF SPINAL CORD INJURIES:
1. Complete Injury: Total loss of sensory and motor function below the injury site. No communication across the injury site – it's like a total roadblock
2. Incomplete Injury: Some motor or sensory function preserved below the level of injury. It's like having a partial detour
LEVELS OF INJURY AND EFFECTS :
- Cervical (C1–C8) Neck: leads to Tetraplegia /quadriplegia(loss of function in all four limbs), breathing issues, in worst case scenario death loss of bowel and bladder control
- Thoracic (T1–T12) Back: 🏋️♀️ Paraplegia, loss of function in legs and trunk. Arms and hands usually spared
- Lumbar (L1–L5) Waist: Paraplegia with more leg and pelvic control. Some independence regained
- Sacral (S1–S5): Some loss of function in hips, legs, and pelvic organs.
