The prescription I never wrote may have saved more antibiotics than the one I did.

A young man walked into a pharmacy convinced he needed antibiotics.

“I’ve had a sore throat for two days,” he said.

“I just need something strong.”

He wasn’t looking for advice.

He was looking for medicine.

Instead of immediately reaching for antibiotics, the healthcare professional asked a few questions.

They explained that not every sore throat is caused by bacteria and that antibiotics aren’t the answer to every illness.

The young man left without antibiotics.

More importantly

He left with knowledge.

As a biomedical scientist, I’ve learned that antimicrobial stewardship isn’t only about choosing the right antibiotic.

Sometimes it’s about recognizing when an antibiotic may not be needed in the first place.

One conversation.

One explanation.

One informed decision.

That’s how we begin protecting medicines that millions of people depend on.

The most powerful prescription isn’t always a tablet.

Sometimes, it’s education.

They Just Gave Me Panado.

That’s the complaint.

No antibiotics.
No “strong” medicine.
Just Paracetamol, and you’re sent home.

So it feels like
“They didn’t take me seriously.”

But here’s what most people don’t know

In the lab, we test before we treat.

When results show
📌No bacterial infection
📌No malaria parasites
📌No serious abnormalities

It means your body is likely dealing with something mild maybe fatigue, a viral illness, stress, or something that will resolve on its own.

And here’s the truth

Not every illness needs “strong medicine.”
Not every symptom needs antibiotics.

In fact, giving unnecessary drugs can do more harm than good.

That “just Panado” is not neglect.
It’s precision care.

It means
Your body is being supported not overloaded.

Because good medicine isn’t about giving more
