Diabetic eye disease, also known as diabetic retinopathy, is a group of eye conditions that affect individuals with diabetes. It occurs when high blood sugar levels damage the retinal blood vessels, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common form, but other conditions like diabetic macular edema and glaucoma can also occur. The symptoms of diabetic eye disease vary depending on the stage and severity of the condition. In the early stages, there may be no noticeable symptoms, but as the disease progresses, symptoms may include blurred or distorted vision, floating floaters, impaired color vision, dark or empty areas, and difficulty seeing well at night.
