City of Harare executives currently attending the HMMAS health and wellness day where executives are being educated on health-related issues with key guest speakers focusing on chronic disease identification and management, worklife balance in a City that never sleeps and Men's health-related issues such as prostate cancer.There is no doubt the platform will go a long way in educating and promoting good health and wellbeing for the executives as well as identifying potential health risks and taking pro-active steps towards prevention and management of disease progression.

Understanding how Co-payments work and why they exist?

A co-payment is an amount that a member is required to pay at the point of care, for certain treatments or procedures. Co-payments arise when both medical aid and patient/ member share the doctor's agreed fee.

A co-payment is therefore a figure known and agreed to by both the medical aid societies and service providers
Co-payments are therefore transparent and predictable especially in an environment where there is a stable currency in use.
Co-payments exist for medical aid companies to remain financially viable and also to address or manage rising healthcare costs.

Understanding shortfalls and how they arise in the medical field.

A shortfall is the difference between what a healthcare service provider charges and what your medical aid pays. This may be due to different reasons such as:
-Service providers charging more than the agreed Tariffs or more than the AHFoZ tariffs. If the service provider’s cost is greater than the set tariff fee, the excess becomes a shortfall, which the service provider may collect from the patient or may choose to waiver. A shortfall occurs when the fee being charged has not been agreed to between medical aid societies and service providers. Shortfalls therefore vary according to service provider and are unpredictable.
Shortfalls may also occur in the following situations:
• If a claim is for treatments that fall under “exclusions “ in the medical aid Rules and in the AHFoZ tariffs
• If the member has exhausted annual global limits as set by the medical aid
• Exchange Rate disparities - the difference between the exchange rate being applied by the service provider may result in shortfalls.
