This is the first of a series about Adult Vaccination.

Hepatitis A is a virus which causes significant liver disease and inflammation. It is usually acquired via the feco-oral route, from contaminated food and water, or from exposure to an infected individual. It can cause fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, reduction in appetite and jaundice, often lasting several weeks.

The easiest way to prevent this is to get a vaccine. Children now have this vaccine as part of their childhood immunisation schedule, but many adults have not taken it.

The primary vaccine course is 2 doses, 6 months to 1 year apart. A booster can be taken after 10 years if needed.

There are 3 main differences where the following vaccines are given in the UAE:
⁃ BCG: protection against Tuberculosis (given at birth)
⁃ Meningitis ACWY (can be given from 2 months old)
⁃ Hepatitis A: this is a food-borne virus which causes liver inflammation (given from 1 year old)

Otherwise, the UAE and German vaccination schedules are essentially the same.

We can discuss further and personalize the vaccination schedule as per individual need and risk during your appointment.
