Healthy Eating in Ramadan...
It is Ramadan, the holy month when over 1.6 billion Muslims across the world are fasting. They abstain from taking all kinds of food, drinking, using oral medications and smoking from sunrise to sundown.
This year Ramadan falls in its sultry summer season. The Midsummer's 15 hours of daylight leave lots of room for exposure to sun, sweating and a potentially dangerous loss of fluids, causing dehydration to the body and bringing about a range of negative health effects - muscle cramps, fatigue, light headedness, dry mouth and nausea. In mild cases, dehydration can be uncomfortable, in severe ones, it can be life-threatening.
Beside this, other kinds of diseases may interfere with healthy fasting. For this reason during the holy month of Ramadan, our diet should not differ very much from our normal diet and should be as simple as possible. If any one follows a well balanced diet, fasting can be good for his/her health and it can also help kick out some of the bad habits, like smoking for example. Here are some general tips for healthy fasting:
• Although 'Samosas', 'Pakoras' and sweetmeats are very much on Ramzan's agenda, try to avoid too much fat and sugar;
• Go easy on salt and caffeine too;
• Take inasmuch fresh fruits and vegetables as you can manage;
• Always have fresh food (especially so in the present rainy season when germs multiply at an amazingly fast rate In even a day's old food);
• Whatever you eat, go moderate;
• Gayer a light 'Aar' and have a light meal altar the 'Isha' prayers; this will facilitate your digestive system immensely;
• Similarly, do not overdo your 'sehri';
• Avoid 'trigger foods' i.e. foods that cause people to desire more and more of the same food (like sugary foods, for instance);
• No matter how, dotty and take some time out for light exercise (like good 20 minutes brisk walking everyday) during Rarnzan; don't fall for the most (mis)used cliche: 'I must rest more in Rainzani)
