How much weight will I actually lose?
This is one of the most important questions to ask before considering bariatric surgery. And the answer is: there is no universal number.
The amount of weight you lose after bariatric surgery depends on several factors, including your initial weight, BMI, age, metabolic health, the procedure chosen, eating patterns, activity levels and your body’s individual response to treatment. Patients often expect weight loss to happen at the same pace throughout the journey. In reality, it doesn’t.
Weight loss is generally more noticeable during the early months after surgery, followed by a gradual slowing as your body adapts. There may also be periods where your weight plateaus before progress resumes. This is why I encourage patients not to compare their results with someone else’s.
For some patients, that may also mean better control of type 2 diabetes, blood pressure, sleep apnoea, mobility and overall quality of life. Individual outcomes vary. The right procedure and expected weight-loss range should always be discussed after a detailed medical assessment.
