The HPV vaccine has brought cervical cancer deaths close to zero.
A landmark study from England found that girls vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV) at ages 12 to 13 now have an almost nonexistent risk of dying from cervical cancer before age 30.
The findings provide the strongest evidence yet that the HPV vaccine isn't just preventing infections or precancerous changes. It's saving lives.
Between 2020 and 2024, researchers recorded zero cervical cancer deaths among women ages 20 to 24 in England. Without the HPV vaccination program, scientists estimate about 23 deaths would have been expected during that period.
The vaccine was first offered to schoolgirls in England in 2008. Since then, researchers estimate it has already prevented around 200 cervical cancer deaths, with many more expected as vaccinated generations grow older.
HPV is an extremely common virus spread through close skin-to-skin contact. Most infections clear on their own, but some persist and can eventually cause cervical cancer. In fact, HPV is responsible for about 99% of cervical cancer cases.
Researchers say the dramatic reduction in deaths is only the beginning. As more vaccinated people reach the ages when cervical cancer is most likely to develop, the benefits are expected to grow even further.
Experts also stress that vaccination is only part of the solution. Regular cervical screening remains essential because no vaccine provides complete protection against every cancer-causing HPV strain.
The World Health Organization has set a goal of eliminating cervical cancer as a public health problem. Results like these suggest that goal may be within reach if vaccination and screening rates remain high.
