A New Benchmark for Educational Architecture 🏫📚

Learning environments shape how knowledge is shared, experienced, and developed. With the new Hoskins Building at The Illawarra Grammar School (TIGS) in Wollongong, an educational facility has been created with exactly this purpose at its core.

As Australia's first all-CLT school building, it demonstrates how timber construction, designed to reduce operational energy demand, and innovative learning spaces can come together in a single project.

Flexible learning spaces, open collaboration areas, and a healthy indoor environment support both focused study and interaction. Generous daylight and exposed timber surfaces create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for students and teachers alike.

Built with KLH® – CLT, the structure combines outstanding energy performance with the benefits of modern timber construction. Thanks to precise planning and a high degree of prefabrication, approximately 300 tonnes of timber structure were installed in just five weeks. Designed to the International Passivhaus Standard, the building conserves resources while contributing to long-term user wellbeing

Sports Center Dounan: Rethinking Public Sports Facilities in Timber 💦

With the Sports Center Dounan, a new benchmark for public timber construction has been created in Taiwan. While large-scale swimming and leisure complexes are typically built using steel or concrete, this project deliberately opted for timber. Alongside sustainability considerations, the material was chosen for its suitability in humid and chlorine-rich environments.

Replacing the former municipal swimming pool, the new sports center brings together an indoor pool, outdoor competition pool, fitness and activity spaces, and a range of recreational amenities under one roof. Its architecture draws inspiration from the greenhouse structures that characterize Yunlin’s agricultural landscape, translating this familiar regional feature into a contemporary destination for sport and leisure.

Aus einer Idee im Wald wurde ein Ort für gemeinsame Erinnerungen.

Über mehrere Tage hinweg planten, bauten und arbeiteten die Teilnehmenden des Baumhauscamps in Gnadenthal gemeinsam auf ein Ziel hin. Aus Baumstämmen, Brettern und Seilen entstand Schritt für Schritt ein Baumhaus, das heute hoch zwischen den Bäumen steht.

Doch das eigentliche Ergebnis ist mehr als die fertige Konstruktion. Es sind die Erfahrungen, die unterwegs gesammelt wurden: gemeinsam anpacken, Verantwortung übernehmen, Herausforderungen meistern und erleben, was möglich wird, wenn viele Menschen zusammenarbeiten.

Wir freuen uns, einen Beitrag zu diesem besonderen Projekt geleistet zu haben. 🌿

Strandrestaurant Brisa – A Timber Pavilion Shaped by Landscape 🌿🌊

Before Strandrestaurant Brisa became a destination for sunny days by the lake, construction started in a very different setting – on a snow-covered beach at Haarrijn Lake.

Inspired by the landscape, the pavilion is defined by four tree-like timber structures supporting individual roof sections. Large transparent façades open the building towards the beach and water, while green roofs, natural ventilation and generous overhangs are integrated into the architectural concept.

Developed in response to ambitious sustainability requirements, the pavilion is largely constructed from timber and bio-based materials. KLH® – CLT forms the load-bearing walls and structural frames, creating a building that becomes part of its surroundings rather than standing apart from them.

New Lodge Farm – Timber Homes in a Green Belt Context 🌿🏡

Set within a designated Green Belt, New Lodge Farm addresses the challenge of introducing new housing into a highly regulated rural setting, requiring a careful balance between development and landscape.

The development consists of a group of contemporary homes, conceived as a modern interpretation of traditional agricultural forms. A restrained material palette of larch, brick, zinc and slate allows the buildings to integrate naturally into their surroundings.
KLH® – CLT was used as the structural system across all dwellings. Its prefabricated nature enabled a rapid construction process, with each building erected in less than two weeks, while requiring a high level of precision in planning, including detailed modelling and coordinated construction details.

Penny Supermarket Aba – Bringing Timber into Everyday Retail 🛒🌲

In Aba, Hungary, the Penny supermarket shows how timber construction can be applied in retail buildings with demanding structural requirements.

KLH® – CLT was used for around 1,000 m² of the structure. The main shopping area spans approximately 20 m, realised with glulam beams, while visible CLT surfaces define the interior space.

KLH® was introduced at an advanced stage of the project, requiring a fast and precise structural solution within a fixed framework. Particular attention was given to structural efficiency and ex*****on: a cantilevered roof of over 2 m was achieved without a conventional backspan—combined with a high level of prefabrication and optimised material use.

Museo del Mar Ibiza – Timber Structure for a Historic Harbour Building ⚓🌿

In the historic harbour of Ibiza’s old town, a protected stone building was carefully transformed into the Museo del Mar, dedicated to the island’s maritime history and coastal culture.

Rather than altering the building’s exterior, the intervention focused on the interior structure. The deteriorated steel floor system was replaced by a new timber structure that stabilises the existing stone shell while maintaining its architectural character.

KLH® – CLT forms this inner structural layer, reinforcing floors and selected walls and creating a clear, fluid interior space. Beyond its structural role, the timber construction contributes to improved energy performance by lining large parts of the interior façades and roof structure. Its natural appearance subtly references the coastal landscape and harbour setting.

Salzburger Freilichtmuseum – Visitor Centre awarded “Holzbotschafter” 🌲🏛️

With the new visitor centre in Großgmain, the Salzburg Open Air Museum has redefined its point of arrival, creating a clearly structured entry to the 50 hectare site.

The building combines timber, glass and concrete while reinterpreting regional farm structures. A sequence of volumes is unified under a continuous roof, forming covered transition spaces and guiding movement through the entrance area. Inside, exposed KLH® – CLT defines the spaces, while a light filled foyer with ticketing and shop becomes the central point of orientation.

A library with around 10,000 volumes and a flexible seminar space extend the building’s use. At its opening in March 2026, the project received the “Holzbotschafter” award, recognising both its architectural approach and the continuation of timber building traditions.
