Emma Stuart
TEMPUS: Works on Paper
24 October – 7 November 2026

Opening celebration Saturday 24 October 3.30 - 5.30pm.
All welcome.

“Time asks something of us.
These works began with the aftermath of the fires of summer 2025/26, when the grass trees flowered in extraordinary numbers—an ancient chorus rising from scorched ground. They are paintings of renewal, but also of attention: an attempt to stay with a place long enough for it to reveal itself.
Working across paper, I return to the same landscapes repeatedly. Each painting begins with looking but gradually becomes an act of listening. Edges dissolve, weather shifts, and the distance between observer and landscape becomes less certain
Tempus is a meditation on time—not measured by clocks, but by textures of trust. It suggests that belonging is not something we find, but something that slowly emerges through sustained attention.”

Watch Emma Stuart and hear more about the country that inspires her on “Back Roads: Grampians, Vic” on ABC TV Thursday, 8 October at 8pm

Emma shares: “It was such a delight to be featured in the Season 12 finale of ABC’s Back Roads, alongside my little boy Redmond, and to have my work included both as an author-illustrator and landscape painter.
The episode celebrates Gariwerd / the Grampians and the people who live and work in this beautiful part of Western Victoria, so it felt especially meaningful to be able to share a little of my own creative life here.

It also comes at a lovely time in the lead-up to my next exhibition, TEMPUS — Emma Stuart: Works on Paper, opening 24 October at cbOne Gallery, Chapman & Bailey, Abbotsford.

Back Roads: Grampians, VIC officially airs this Thursday, 8 October at 8pm on ABC TV, and is also available on ABC iview.”

Stream Back Roads Season 12 now on ABC iview or Thursdays 8pm on ABC TV.

Mark Chapman takes us through the origin story of Chapman and Bailey’s sustainably sourced and crafted stretcher bars.

We started making stretchers in the early 1990’s, when they were generally made using imported timbers harvested from old growth forests—ecosystems which have developed over long periods of time without disturbance.

Our goal was to create high quality, affordable stretches using sustainable practices and materials. We use a timber called Araucaria, which is plantation grown in QLD.

Further, we use timber wedges made of scrap materials rather than using plastic, because who doesn’t want less plastic in the world?

Ying has been busy netting some ornate frames. It is a rare, traditional process that is not seen much these days⚜️It involves adhering netting to prepared frames before they are gilded. It's a tedious method which often requires revisions, all worth it for that final luxurious, chain mail-esque look!

Celebrate the Spring Equinox with Artist and Life Model Elsa Thorp🌸23rd September, 6:45-9:30pm.

This intimate, untutored life drawing session merges the human form with raw botanical elements, inviting artists into a space of shared contemplation.

Drawing inspiration from Ikebana and her photographic collaboration with Amaury Geisel, Elsa weaves her deep relationship with seasonal local flora into life modelling. Posing in harmony with fresh, structural blossom branches, she offers artists a unique study of fleeting seasonal beauty and human form.
