It's Book Week! And in our OT sessions, a good book does more than tell a story, it's a tool for connection, regulation, and understanding.

Our therapists shared their favourite books to support the children they work with, the ones that help children understand their feelings, social situations, and how their brains work.

Have any of these made it onto your bookshelf at home? 📚

Sometimes, the right seat can make a big difference 🪑

For some children, staying seated, focused and ready to learn isn’t about trying harder. It’s about having the right sensory support.

OT can help by understanding how your child’s sensory system affects their attention, movement and regulation, then assessing which flexible seating option is the right fit for them.

From wobble cushions and movement-friendly chairs, the goal isn’t to stop movement. It’s to support your child to move in a way that helps their body stay regulated and their brain stay ready to learn.

At Learn for Life, we support children to thrive in learning and life 💛

Every child is different, and sometimes it’s hard to know what’s really going on, or what would actually help.

That’s exactly what our Understanding Your Child assessment is for. It’s a one-off session that gives you real clarity: a clear picture of your child’s strengths and needs, explained in plain language, with practical recommendations you can start using straight away.

Each assessment is chosen specifically for your child, based on the areas you’re noticing challenges in, so what you get back is relevant and useful.

It might be worth booking an OT assessment if you’ve noticed challenges with:
🧦 Daily self-care (dressing, feeding, toileting)
📚 Attention, focus, or learning at school
🧸 Social or play skills
🌈 Sensory sensitivities

Send us a message or refer online to book an assessment.

Dr Ross Greene's words sit at the heart of everything we do at Learn for Life 💛

It's a small shift in thinking with a big impact.

When we stop seeing tricky moments as a child choosing to misbehave, and start seeing them as a child who needs support with a developing skill, everything changes.

We get curious instead of frustrated.

We support instead of correct.

This is especially true for emotional regulation. No child wants to feel out of control.

Big reactions tell us a child's skills are still growing, and that they need connection and co-regulation, not consequences.

Whether we're supporting emotional regulation, play, handwriting or daily routines, our starting point is always the same: your child is doing the best they can with the skills they have right now, and skills can grow.

We’re excited and proud to share that Learn for Life is now featured on the Preschool Boost Menu as an approved provider of occupational therapy support 🎉

Our Building Little Hands program is a small group OT experience designed to support children’s early fine motor development through fun, play-based activities delivered by our experienced occupational therapists.

Children build important foundations for participating in everyday preschool activities, while educators gain practical strategies they can continue using within their routines, play and learning environments.

We’re passionate about bringing meaningful occupational therapy support directly into preschool communities and working collaboratively with educators to help children thrive.

If you’re a preschool interested in having Building Little Hands delivered at your centre, get in touch with our team — we’d love to chat about how we can support your children and educators 👋

Our OT students, Zoe and Brianna, have been busy behind the scenes working on an exciting 'Regulation in Reach' project, focused on supporting therapists, parents, and educators to confidently implement sensory strategies in everyday settings.

You might see them around the clinic and they may come and say hello 👋

We’re so glad to have them with us and look forward to sharing more about what they’ve been creating to support service provision.

If loud places have ever sent your child into meltdown, their brain isn't overreacting.

The vacuum. A balloon popping. A busy café. They're not just hearing these sounds, they're processing them in a way that can feel like an alarm going off.

Sensory differences like this are what our OTs are trained to support. Swipe for strategies that actually help 💛

Hard to wait during games? Your child isn’t being naughty. Their brain just needs a little practice hitting “pause” ⏳

Here are 4 gentle ways to make turn-taking easier:
1️⃣ Ask what they need first: a few minutes to explore or play solo today?
2️⃣ Make the wait visible: sand timers or turn cards help time feel manageable.
3️⃣ Keep their hands busy: fidgets are perfect for those wiggles.
4️⃣ Start small: short games, small waits, big wins for learning patience!

With the right support, kids can learn to wait and play with others. And that’s exactly what we love helping them do in OT🌟

Before kids can manage big feelings, they need two things: awareness of what they're feeling, and real strategies that actually work for them.

That's exactly what our Calm Down Toolbox is all about. 🧰

In OT, we don't tell children how to calm down — we invite them to discover what already helps. Because every strategy is valid, and every child is different.

When kids build their own personalised toolbox, they learn something really powerful. That they are capable of managing big feelings with the right tools around them.
