Happy Orthoptic Awareness Week 2026!

This year's theme is "Because I am an Orthoptist", recognising the many ways orthoptists go above and beyond to make a difference to the lives of our patients, eye care and our wider communities.

Orthoptics is a niche profession specialising in eye movement assessment, low vision, neurological disorders of vision, and treatment. We love what we do, and work tirelessly to achieve the best outcomes for our patients and their families.

Our favourite meeting of the year, the Australian and New Zealand Strabismus Society. Two full days of brilliant presentations, each one so relevant to our very specific area of expertise and practice. Ideas shared, difficult cases worked through, and such a collegial and supportive environment. A wonderful bunch of orthoptic and ophthalmology colleagues.

And thank you to our amazing patient who was happy to attend as a live case presentation. Such an incredible individual with such an important story to share. Thank you 👏

Next year it's Adelaide's turn ... can't wait!

Happy Christmas team building! A few weeks ago we enjoyed terrarium making as our end of year event. So much fun! And now the competition continues .... to see whose plants survive the longest 🤣

A wonderful few days of sharing and learning at the 2025 Trauma Symposium. Thank you to Nicole Kelly (Trauma Nursing Director RAH) and the Royal Australian College of Surgeons, for the opportunity to provide insight to the wider medical and allied health professions about the role of orthoptics in the care of patients following concussion and moderate/severe traumatic brain injury.

It was a joy to present to a room of likeminded professionals, and to hear powerful presentations from incredible TBI survivors such as and on their journey from injury, through recovery, and into life after their injury. Presentation highlights also included an update on chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) by Assoc/Prof Rowena Mobbs.

At on Saturday, RANZCO Fellows Prof Frank Martin and Dr Anu Mathew joined NSW Health Senior Clinical Advisor A/Prof Elisabeth Murphy, SA Optometrist Cassandra Haines, Children's Health Queensland Nurses Chantelle Pooley and Joanne Selby, and SA Paediatric Orthoptist Tania Straga to discuss children's vision screening programs in the respective jurisdictions.

💡Topics covered efficacy of screening technologies, importance of follow up clinics for children with vision problems, and strategies for advocating to government.

Another conference! This time the 3rd Congress of Asia Pacific Strabismus and Paediatric Ophthalmology Society. A strong contingent from South Australia, with a good mix of orthoptists, ophthalmologists, and optometrists. Team work makes the dream work.

Wonderful discussions on universal vision screening, myopia management and binocular vision disorders. We even taught a few ophthalmologists how to fit Fresnel prisms!

We've made it to Brisbane for the 15th International Orthoptic Congress - A Fusion of Global Expertise. An exciting 3 days of presentations, sharing of knowledge, collaboration and research. And having such fun along the way!
