Maintaining family connections is an important part of wellbeing, social inclusion and quality of life. NDIS supports can play a valuable role in helping participants maintain relationships with family members who may live some distance away and who would otherwise be difficult to visit independently.
Recently, Mary used her supports to visit her brother, who lives in Mintaro. Due to distance and transport barriers, opportunities to spend time together are limited, making these visits particularly meaningful. During the trip, Mary was able to reconnect with her brother, spend time with family and strengthen important family relationships.
The visit also provided an opportunity for Mary to engage in community and cultural activities. While in the Clare region, Mary attended an art exhibition featuring work by her sister-in-law. This experience allowed her to celebrate a family member's achievements, participate in the local arts community and share meaningful experiences with her family.
The trip supported Mary's social and emotional wellbeing by reducing isolation, strengthening family connections and enabling participation in community life. It also provided opportunities to develop confidence in accessing community activities, travelling to new locations and engaging in social interactions outside her usual routine.
