🎨 What happens when you’re allowed to choose?

In creative counselling, I might have pencils, paints, clay, collage papers, textiles, pastels, markers and all sorts of interesting little materials available.

But I don’t necessarily decide which one someone should use.

Sometimes the simple act of choosing is part of the process.

One person might reach immediately for clay because they want something they can squeeze, manipulate and reshape.

Someone else might prefer the predictability of a pencil.

Another person might be drawn to tearing paper for collage, while someone who feels overwhelmed by too many choices may feel much more comfortable when I offer just two or three materials to explore.

There doesn’t have to be a psychological meaning behind every choice.

What matters is noticing what feels comfortable, interesting, satisfying—or even uncomfortable—to that individual.

This is particularly important in the neuro-affirming way I work at AngelArts Studio. Creative experiences don’t need to look the same for everybody.

You can get messy… or absolutely not.

You can experiment… or use the same favourite material every week.

You can create something meaningful… or simply enjoy how something feels in your hands.

There is no “right” way to create here. 💛

Sometimes having the freedom to discover what works for you is therapeutic in itself.

🎨 The materials are part of the process too…

Something I’ve been reflecting on since our creative retreat is just how much the materials we choose to work with can influence our experience — often without us consciously realising it.

Clay is a beautiful example.

It’s cool, tactile, resistant and responsive. We can squeeze it, push it, roll it, smooth it, tear it apart and begin again. Working with it engages our hands and senses and can naturally invite us to slow down and become more present with what we’re doing.

But every material offers something different.

🖍️ Oil pastels might invite bold movement and pressure.

🎨 Paint can encourage flow, experimentation and letting go of control.

✂️ Collage allows us to select, tear, arrange, layer and reorganise pieces until something feels right.

✏️ Pencils can offer precision and control.

🧶 Textiles, fibres and natural materials bring texture and sensory experience.

📓 Journalling materials can give us a place to collect fragments, thoughts, images and memories.

And sometimes we’re simply drawn to a particular material without knowing why.

That’s one of the fascinating things about creative therapeutic work.

Before we have spoken a word or tried to understand what something means, we are already making choices — reaching, touching, rejecting, arranging, changing and experimenting.

The therapeutic value isn’t necessarily in producing an artwork or finding a hidden meaning in everything we create.

Sometimes it can simply be found in the experience of feeling, touching, moving, choosing, noticing and creating.

Our hands and senses are participating in the process too.

Perhaps that’s why I love the philosophy behind Head • Hand • Heart so much. 💛

Sometimes our hands begin the conversation before our head has found the words.

🌿 Holding Bowls — when our hands know before our words do.AngelArts Studio

There is something incredibly grounding about working with clay.

During our creative retreat, we explored Holding Bowls — slowly forming a small vessel by hand, allowing the clay to respond to pressure, movement and touch.

As I worked, I found myself thinking about the idea of holding.

What am I holding right now?
What am I ready to put down?
What do I want to make space for?

There was no need for the bowl to be perfectly shaped or beautifully finished. The process was about slowing down, noticing, feeling and allowing our hands to lead.

Later, our bowls were placed into the earth and pit fired over the fire, adding another layer of transformation that we couldn’t completely control.

I love processes like this because they remind me that creative therapy isn’t always about making something that looks beautiful.

Sometimes it’s about creating a space where something can be felt, held, released or transformed.

And sometimes a small clay bowl can hold far more than clay. 🤍

🎥 A little glimpse of the Holding Bowls process from our retreat.

🔥 Creative Retreat Reflections — Holding Bowls 🤲

One of the processes from our creative retreat that really stayed with me was creating Holding Bowls from clay.

There is something beautifully grounding about working with clay.

Using our hands, we slowly shaped the clay into small vessels — each one different, imperfect and carrying the marks of the person who made it.

But the process became about much more than simply making a bowl.

It invited me to think about what we hold.

What are we carrying with us?

What deserves to be held gently?

What are we protecting?

And what might we be ready to put down or release?

Once our bowls had dried, we gathered outside and placed them into a pit fire. 🔥

Watching the fire transform something we had shaped with our own hands added another layer to the experience — change, uncertainty and letting go of control.

We could create the bowl.

We could place it into the fire.

But we couldn’t completely control what happened next.

And perhaps there is something quite beautiful in that.

In creative therapeutic work, sometimes an object can hold something that words can’t quite reach. A bowl can become more than a bowl — it can become a container for a thought, feeling, memory, hope or intention.

🤲 What are you holding right now?

And perhaps the gentler question…

Does all of it still need to be carried?

🌿🎨 Creative Retreat Reflections 🎨🌿

I’ve just returned from a beautiful few days at Point Lowly, immersed in creativity, reflection and connection alongside a wonderful group of fellow art therapists.

Set against the incredible backdrop of the lighthouse, ocean and surrounding landscape, the retreat gave us something that can be surprisingly difficult to make space for in everyday life — time to simply create and connect with the materials we find in nature.

We explored a range of creative processes, experimented with materials, shared ideas, reflected, laughed, connected and allowed ourselves to follow our curiosity without needing to know where it would lead.

One of the things I’m bringing home with me is a renewed appreciation for the therapeutic benefits of the materials and tools used in a creative process rather than the finished product.

What we feel in our bodies as we use the tools and materials to make artwork, imprint texture, create with colour, using a found object or unexpected idea can become the beginning of something much bigger when we give ourselves permission to explore it.

Over the next few posts, I’m going to share some of the individual creative processes I experienced and created during the retreat — not just what I made, but the thinking, discoveries and reflections that emerged along the way.

I’m looking forward to seeing how some of these ideas might also find their way into my work at AngelArts Studio. 💛

Sometimes we need to step away from the everyday to make room for new ideas to find us.

☕ A quiet moment to simply be. 💗

This morning’s view… coffee in hand, the sea in front of me and a lighthouse in the distance.

Sometimes wellbeing doesn’t need to be complicated.

It can be a warm cup of coffee.
A beautiful view.
Fresh sea air.
A few quiet minutes before the day begins.

I’m spending a few days immersed in creativity, reflection and connection with other art therapists, and it’s reminded me of something I often encourage in others but sometimes need to remember myself…

We all need space to refill our own cup. ☕💕

To slow down.
To notice what’s around us.
To create without expectation.
And to simply enjoy the moment we’re in.

Today, this is my little moment. 🌊✨

What’s one small thing that helps you refill your cup?

🌿 What happens in a Creative Counselling session?

If you’ve never experienced Creative Counselling before, you might wonder what actually happens in a session.

The simple answer? It depends on you.

At AngelArts Studio, sessions are person-centred, which means there isn’t a one-size-fits-all activity waiting for you when you arrive.

We might talk while creating, work with collage or mixed media, explore a journal prompt, use sensory materials, draw or paint, or simply have a conversation.

And sometimes… we might spend a session creating something because keeping our hands busy makes talking feel a little easier.

🎨 You don’t need to be artistic.
💛 You don’t need to know what you want to create.
🌱 You don’t need to have the “right” words.
✨ And you certainly don’t need to make something beautiful.

The artwork isn’t the test.

The creative process is simply another way to communicate, explore and connect.

My role is to meet you where you are and provide a supportive, neuro-affirming and trauma-sensitive space where you can explore things at your own pace.

Sometimes we talk.

Sometimes we create.

Often, we do a little of both.

Creative Counselling

💛 A safe space doesn’t mean you have to share everything.

Starting counselling can feel daunting, especially if you’re worried you’ll be expected to talk about things before you’re ready.

At AngelArts Studio, you are always allowed to go at your own pace.

You might begin by chatting while creating, choosing images for a collage, working in a journal, or simply spending some time getting comfortable in the space.

You don’t have to explain everything.

You don’t have to answer every question.

And you don’t have to create something with a deep meaning behind it.

Sometimes trust begins with something as simple as feeling comfortable enough to just be.

My approach to Creative Counselling is person-centred, neuro-affirming and trauma-sensitive, which means we work together in ways that feel supportive and appropriate for you.

🌿 Your story belongs to you. You decide when, how and whether you’re ready to share it.

“I’m just not creative.”

🌱 You don’t have to be “good at art” to benefit from creativity.

One of the biggest myths I hear is:

“I’m just not creative.”

The truth is, creative counselling isn’t about artistic talent.

It’s about giving yourself permission to explore, express, and reflect in a way that feels natural to you.

Some days that might mean:
🎨 Painting with bold colours.
✂️ Cutting and arranging magazine images.
📝 Writing a few honest lines in a journal.
🌿 Creating with textures, paper, or found objects.
💛 Or simply talking while your hands stay busy.

There are no grades.
No perfect outcome.
No pressure to create something worthy of hanging on a wall.

Just a safe, supportive space where the process matters far more than the finished piece.

At AngelArts Studio, I believe creativity can help us slow down, notice what we’re feeling, and reconnect with ourselves—one small step at a time.

💛 You don’t need artistic ability. You just need a willingness to begin.
