One of our teachers shared a beautiful dharma talk this week about connection and community, and how both are deeply woven into the practice of yoga.
In modern life, it can be easy to think of yoga as something purely individual.
A solo practice.
A workout.
A way to stretch, strengthen or unwind.
And while personal practice is incredibly valuable, there is also something quietly transformative about practising alongside others.
Breathing together.
Moving together.
Resting together.
Being witnessed exactly as you are, without needing to perform or pretend.
Yoga philosophy reminds us that we are not separate from one another. That connection—to self, to community and to the wider world—is part of the practice itself.
At a studio, something else begins to happen beyond the shapes and sequences.
Experienced teachers offer guidance, support, safety and perspective.
Community creates accountability, encouragement and belonging.
People begin to recognise each other. Conversations happen before and after class. Familiar faces become friends.
And perhaps one of the loveliest things of all:
We can only attend these shared spaces because others choose to attend them too.
Every person who walks through the studio doors helps sustain the teachers, the practice, the conversations, the warmth and the community that make these spaces possible in the first place.
There is something profoundly human about gathering together intentionally especially in a world that can sometimes feel increasingly disconnected.
And maybe that’s part of why yoga studios matter so much.
