✅ Understanding the Pain Pathway
▪️Pain is the body’s warning system that alerts us to injury or potential harm.
▪️When tissue is damaged, specialized nerve endings called nociceptors detect the stimulus and send signals through the nervous system to the brain.
🔹 Step 1: Site of Injury
Pain receptors are activated by injury, inflammation, heat, cold, or pressure. Fast A-delta fibers transmit sharp pain, while slow C-fibers carry dull, aching pain.
🔹 Step 2: Spinal Cord
The pain signal enters the spinal cord, where it is processed and relayed through the spinothalamic tract toward the brain.
🔹 Step 3: Brainstem
The brainstem helps regulate alertness, reflexes, and the body’s response to pain.
🔹 Step 4: Cerebrum
The signal reaches the thalamus and somatosensory cortex, where pain is consciously perceived. The limbic system also contributes to the emotional aspects of pain.
