More than two years ago, Epilepsy Australia began advocating for a National Senate Inquiry because we believed the experiences of people living with epilepsy deserved to be heard at the highest level. We, The Epilepsy Centre are part of Epilepsy Australia
and today, the final report has been tabled.
27 recommendations.
A National Epilepsy Action Plan. Better diagnosis and care pathways. Greater awareness. Epilepsy Nurses and navigation. Peer support. NDIS reform. Research. Workforce development. Better access for regional, rural and remote Australians.
For The Epilepsy Centre, this is a very special moment.
But today belongs most of all to the people and families who trusted the Inquiry with their stories — sometimes stories of extraordinary hardship, grief and loss.
The report has heard them.
We at The Epilepsy Centre (Epilepsy Association of SA & NT Inc.) want to thank those families for speaking up! Thank you sincerely to Kym, Rebecca, Carolyn, Tara, Kat, Haloti for your incredible passion and strength to speak on behalf of your beautiful children.
Please know that what you have done will make a difference to so many families in the years to come.
Now the task is to ensure those voices translate into action.
We are deeply grateful to former Senator Wendy Askew, whose advocacy was instrumental in bringing this Inquiry into being, and to Senators from across the Parliament who listened carefully to our community.
Today, that conversation has become a roadmap for reform.
