Title: Kidney Failure After Living Kidney Donation in Australia: A National Registry Linkage Study, 2004โ€“2024

Authors: Melanie Wyld, Kate Wyburn

By linking the Australia and New Zealand Living Kidney Donor Registry with Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry (ANZDATA), researchers were able to generate the first robust Australian estimates of long-term kidney failure risk after living donation.

๐Ÿ“Š Key findings from 2004โ€“2024:
-5,291 donors followed over ~57,000 person-years
-Only 3 donors required kidney replacement therapy (KRT)
-No cases within the first 10 years post-donation

Title: Impacts of preoperative kidney function and acute kidney injury on long-term kidney failure after cardiac surgery: a registry-based cohort study

This registry-based cohort study draws on large-scale data to explore how preoperative kidney function and the development of acute kidney injury (AKI) influence long-term outcomes following cardiac surgery.

Thank you to Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) News, and to national health reporter Stephanie Dalzell, for taking the time to report on the findings of the ANZDATARegistry / Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology (ANZSN) haemodialysis capacity report and for bringing this issue into the national spotlight.

ABC article:

For people living with kidney disease, dialysis isnโ€™t a choice, itโ€™s a lifeโ€‘sustaining treatment. Maintaining access to it can be incredibly hard on patients: long travel, uncertainty about treatment availability, workforce shortages, and the constant disruption to daily life all take a real physical and emotional toll.

This reporting and the data behind it clearly show what many patients already know, accessing dialysis is becoming harder, and the strain is felt most by those who rely on treatment just to stay alive. Shining a light on these realities is critical if weโ€™re serious about protecting patient safety and dignity now and into the future.

Dialysis units across Australia and New Zealand are being forced to ration lifesaving care for patients with kidney failure, according to a major new report which has warned of a "significant threat" to patient safety.

Today we release the 2025 ANZSN & ANZDATA Haemodialysis Capacity Survey, the most comprehensive assessment of dialysis capacity across Australia and New Zealand to date.

The findings reveal growing pressure on haemodialysis services, with many units operating at or beyond safe and sustainable capacity.

Last week, we were pleased to welcome Paolo (Pao) Cardelli (Consumer Advisory Panel Chair) and Jill Naylor (newly appointed Deputy Chair) to SAHMRI.

Jill was visiting from WA and took the opportunity to meet with the ANZDATARegistry Team and tour the building. The visit provided a valuable chance to connect with the team, strengthen relationships between Consumer Advisory Panel and staff. It was also a great opportunity to explore ways to further collaborate and enhance engagement moving forward.

Thank you, Paolo and Jill, for taking the time to visit.

๐Ÿ’šโค๏ธ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’™ World Kidney Day 2026 (WKD) ๐Ÿ’šโค๏ธ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’™
Today is World Kidney Day, an important time to recognise the impact of kidney disease worldwide.
Every year, Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry (ANZDATA) plays a vital role in understanding kidney health. By capturing highโ€‘quality, comprehensive data, ANZDATA supports clinicians, researchers, health services, and communities to improve outcomes for people living with kidney disease.

Across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand:
๐Ÿ’šMore than 21,000 people rely on lifeโ€‘sustaining dialysis
๐Ÿ’›Just over 14,000 people are currently living with a kidney transplant

Behind these numbers are real people, real stories, and real challenges.
Today, we honour the kidney community and reaffirm our commitment to supporting evidenceโ€‘based, peopleโ€‘centred kidney care.
