It is okay for our children to be disappointed. 💛

Natural consequences are one of the most powerful tools we have as parents, carers and educators, and I encourage families not to be afraid of them.

When a child is reminded of the expectation and chooses to continue an unexpected behaviour, calmly naming what will happen next puts the power back in their hands. It is not about right or wrong, or good or bad. That language is judgement laden. It is about saying, "The expectation here is this. If you choose to keep going, this is what will happen. What choice will you make?"

A few things I have learnt over many years:
🌱 Connect it to their currency. Every child values something different. For one child it might be the end of day snack, for another a favourite game. Fair means everyone gets the same consequence. Equitable means each child gets what they need to succeed.

🌱 Follow through, no matter the reaction. Tears and big feelings are okay. If a big reaction changes the outcome, our children learn that the reaction works.

🌱 Set them up for success next time. Before a similar situation, gently remind them what happened last time and ask what they are planning to choose today. You might be surprised at how thoughtfully they answer.
Natural consequences are not about control. They teach our children that they have real agency in their lives, and that their choices matter.

🐣 Exciting news at the studio today — our fertilised chicken eggs have arrived! 🥚

The children helped carry the boxes down to the studio and build our incubator and chick station together. Carrying a box with a friend is harder than it looks! You have to talk about how fast to go, which gate to use, and who is walking backwards. It was wonderful to hear the children saying things like "Can you go a bit slower?" as they worked as a team.

Our eggs need 21 days in the incubator, so we have been learning all about temperature and humidity while we wait. 🌡️ The chicks are rare heritage breeds and will join our flock of laying hens once they grow into pullets.

Shop's open at Thrive with Ali Fleming Play Studio!

Today the children ran their very own fruit and veg shop — harvesting tangerines and oranges, writing up sale signs, and calling out to customers.

We're building towards a group goal of $100, and once we get there, the whole learning community will vote together on something special to spend it on!

We also had a beautiful visit from two loyal little customers who love supporting our shop with their pocket money — thank you for always stopping by! 💛

Such a lovely, hands-on way to practise teamwork, communication, and a bit of maths along the way.

Conversation is like a game of tennis.

Today in group we talked about how a chat between friends works just like a rally — one person serves with a comment or question, the other hits it back, and then it's their turn to serve again. No one hogging the ball, no one skipping their turn to receive.

It's such a simple idea, but it's teaching our kids something huge: how to wait, how to listen, and how to notice when it's someone else's turn to talk.

We also introduced the idea of "cheeky worries" — those sneaky thoughts that pop up out of nowhere and loop around and around in our heads. We practised a favourite strategy today: metaphorically snipping the loop. If worrying about something isn't helping us reach our goal, it's time to change strategy, not repeat it.

And in a beautiful, gentle moment, the group talked about how it's okay for people to believe different things — that someone disagreeing with your belief doesn't make your belief any less true or valid for you.

Big feelings, big ideas, small humans doing brilliant work today. 💛
