After attending a Fringe show, we thought we would go along.

On arriving at , we could easily find wheelchair ramp, easy access inside venue. Disabled toilet also available!

It was striking just how much noise was in the main bar/bistro area. With TAB, loud chatter, and kitchen din. Such a stark contrast to the ’Quiet Dinner’ area, set offside, and secluded. A small room, but already 2-3 tables present at 5:30pm! We were comfortably seated, and noted a ‘Break Out Room’ accessible to patrons. By the time we left, there would have been at least 6-7 tables! Some patrons visibly stimming, wearing headphones, some with hearing aids, and everyone mindful of one another. Sound levels almost non-existent, no music, or kitchen/staff noise. Staff kind, accommodating to patrons needs. Overall, a fantastic option for those dealing with autism, sensory overload, hearing difficulty, and impairment. I shall try to attend as many as these possible!

Th Arkaba ‘Quiet Dinners’ are run on the 1st Mon each month, in conjunction with Autism SA.

FOOD : FIVE STARS ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Excellent value for money, and quality ingredients. I had 3 natural oysters, and burrata, served with balsamic glaze, and cherry tomatoes. Burrata came with a bowl of fresh garlic/herb bread..
My support worker had half schnitzel, with chips/ salad. I ended up taking half the burrata home!

🍤 PAUL’S SEAFOOD - Gouger St 🐟

ACCESS / AMBIENCE : 5 STARS ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
After enquiring, as to wheelchair access, (there is step to enter restaurant), staff informed me that unfortunately, they didn’t have a wheelchair ramp, but I was welcome to sit at the tables outside. I actually visited on 2 separate occasions, very close together, as I was impressed with service on initial visit. The first night I, with my dear friend, Ingemar, had no idea the Clipsal 500 street party was on down Gouger Street! (so noise, and exhaust fumes where too much for us to sit outdoors.) Staff were amazing, assisting me manually indoors, seating us at closest table possible. They assisted me in leaving restaurant as well. The 2nd time, they were only too happy to do the same. The Manager greeted me in a friendly, and warm manner, like a regular. Was very impressed with the way they accommodated me.I did need to use the bathroom that particular night, and as their bathrooms were located, upstairs, staff assisted, allowing me to use staff bathroom downstairs, via kitchen.
Acoustically, it was hard to gauge on our for 1st visit as the place was absolutely chockers by 6:30 pm! However, the 2nd time, even with 3 or 4 tables downstairs, sound levels remained low. There isn’t any music, extremely minimal noise from kitchen.

Despite the fact not wheelchair accessible, very appropriate for those with sensory, hearing issues, staff incredible assisting me with what I needed to be comfortable on both visits.

6: Small chips/salad plate $7.90 (Overheard manager say “Give her a GOOD portion! 😆so I know I received twice as much as was expected!)
7: Salt& Pepper Squid (with chips/salad/tartare) $35 (my friend took 2/3 home, it was very large!

ACCESS:
FIVE STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Shopfront situated on Level 2 of Myer Centre, and wheelchair accessible. Ample space to navigate around (most) areas of the shop! Very spacious layout. On chatting with the fabulous owner, he stated how important it was to him to have a bookshop where people weren’t bumping into each other in the aisles, whilst perusing. He also said he did want to make sure everyone could access the store, and I expressed my thanks at his attitude!
The store is quiet, and music is played at minimal levels. Because of the spaciousness, even when a few customers are inside, you still feel like you’re having a solo curated experience!

This is not just a bookstore. It also sells an eclectic array of giftware, retro framed posters, opulent hand-crafted chess sets, old vinyl, and DVD’s! A fabulous shelf of Penguin Classics, comics, and graphic novels, also are present. Quaint surrounds provide little ‘reading nooks’ where patrons can peruse their finds, and ‘about to purchase!’

I just had to buy local author, Rebekah Clarkson’s ‘Barking Dogs’, ’s (Nick Cave - ‘The Death of Bunny Moon’, and the original version of The Great Gatsby, on DVD… bargains!

What a wonderful place. I urge you to pay a visit, if you haven’t already! It’s an adventure, in itself! 🤍

🍺 THE GOLDEN WATTLE 🍻

An after-show cast get together, saw me, (as audience member), joining everyone at . A great find! 👍

ACCESS / AMBIENCE : FIVE STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Access to venue is excellent. Doorways wide enough to accommodate an electric wheelchair, and at street level (no steps!) I was easily able to navigate around venue, and sit my chair at table with ample space to turn.
The atmosphere itself I found to be great. I don’t know who was in charge of the playlist that night, but I was instantly projected back to my teenage angst years, with Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, Nirvana, The Pixies all making features! Music was not overbearing, however, so it was easy to hold conversation, and hear. Patron noise minimised by good acoustics indoors, so on all accounts, it was in no way a triggering environment on our visit.

FOOD/SERVICE: FIVE STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Meals were ample size! I ordered a Caesar Salad, and added grilled chicken. I really didn’t need the chicken, however, as the salad itself was chock full of everything you would want in a good Caesar. (Plenty of good quality shaved parmesan, whole anchovy fillets, egg, plentiful croutons, and a good dressing.) I also ordered some toasted ciabatta with butter. Meals ordered on our table ranged from the classic fritz and sauce sanga(!!), to schnitzels, burgers. Service was prompt, meals delivered quickly, and all within good time of one another. (Considering we were a large group, staff did well with this!)

Overall, a fab experience. Will definitely visit again, if you haven’t followed on Instagram, it’s WELL worth it for the sheer poetic ramblings of whoever captions each photo… as a poet/writer myself, I find it incredibly entertaining. 😆

WHAT A PHENOMENAL EXPERIENCE!!

ACCESS: 5 STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
(VENUE AND OVERALL EXPERIENCE)

Staff did a fabulous job, in regards to access. Wheelchair ramps located around the side of the building, entry via side entrance, (which staff assisted with.) Venue itself is quite breathtaking to look at. Being a predominantly older gen crowd for Dark Side, (think plentiful 70 odd-year-olds, in Pink Floyd T-shirts! (FABULOUS to see! There were quite a few mobility aids in use. Staff ushered me in first, with my wheelchair, where I was able to transfer to one of the beanbags they had on site. The view intended to be watched from the large dome screen rigged into the ceiling, so we all reclined in our beanbags to view. Staff attentive to all audience members, particularly as many patrons that evening struggled with mobility, especially getting back up out of the beanbags. Wheelchair accessible toilet on site. Very impressed with overall accessibility of all aspects - show, venue, and staff, all amazing. The experience itself was quite phenomenal. If you’re a fan of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of The Moon, and you love futuristic, high-tech imagery of the solar system, astronauts and various alien creatures, you will greatly enjoy this. The visuals complimented the album perfectly. Standout track for me was ‘Money’, as this track always holds a dear spot in my heart, from childhood memories.

Overall, very impressed with event, from venue, to organisation. Thank you much Electric Fields! A phenomenal evening of visuals, paired with a classic rock album.

EAST END CELLARS

ACCESS : 5 STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

East End Cellars is located on Ebenezer St, and front outdoor tables are accessible via ground level. Pavements surrounding are tricky, with few ramped areas, and many jolting cracks etc, but this is more an Adelaide City Council issue. The indoor area is also wheelchair accessible. I did not get the chance to investigate accessible toilets.

Ambience-wise, it was very serene sitting outdoors. A weekday lunchtime crowd was sparse, so sound was at a minimum. It didn’t appear too bustling inside, so I would imagine the environment to be much the same.

FOOD / SERVICE : THREE STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was with my good friend Ingemar, (who you may recall me meeting from a previous post!)
Ingemar comes here each week for their flounder dish. I ordered some crusty baguette, with oil and dukkah ($10) and a Caesar salad. Ingemar brought Swedish crackers and gorgonzola cheese with him for me to taste! (Pics included.)

Ingemar’s fish looked appealing, and plentiful, but I have to say, my Caesar salad was somewhat lacking. Parmesan was sparse, and grated (not shaved, as is preferable), there were few anchovies, no egg, and the speck was a little too dry. At $20, it was fairly underwhelming. Wine was fantastic, and reasonably priced for a wine bar.

Staff were great, as they obviously new Ingemar well! Friendly, and accommodating.

VENUE : 5 STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Venue is airy, filled with natural light, and interiors are quite beautiful. Outdoor area is pretty, and serene. ☀️

THE DUKE OF YORK HOTEL

ACCESS:
4 STARS⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

After ringing prior, and speaking a very helpful staff member (who also took the time to introduce themselves on the night!), we were told we could access the beer garden through a side entrance. (Small risers leading into the main bar at front, but access through back.) Sitting outside was fine for us, as Fringe crowds made it very noisy indoors! I don’t think there is an accessible bathroom, however, staff attentiveness, and service was fantastic! Beer garden seating is large benches with tables, and also high ‘kegs’ with bar stools. Not ideal for those with back issues, but pretty standard for most pubs.

Overall, I was impressed by the staff efforts to ensure we had a good experience - thanks The Duke!

We shared a falafel burger, with chips (A deal for $20.90, with a free pint on Saturdays.) I forgot to take a picture, so have included a shot of their burgers, from their own page. One burger was ample for us to share, and my partner had a beer thrown in with that! Bargain!

AN All-round excellent experience at this venue, and an exquisite show from just to top the evening off! Review below :

♿️ ACCESS/EXPERIENCE : 5 STAR
⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Access to venue is outlined in great detail on the website, and the attention to detail is impeccable. Entrance to venue is at street level, with staff manning front doors, and very happy to assist. A lift will take you up to level 1, where the performance space is situated. I was incredibly impressed by the ethic of , who saw my difficulty in backing out of the lift in my electric chair, and actually took the time to suggest the venue may need mirrors in there. 🤍 Furthermore, she asked me if I had any recommendations on improving their accessibility! 👏I absolutely did not, as everything was fantastic. A wheelchair accessible toilet is located upstairs, and the performance space itself is all on level.

Carmel is an absolutely fabulous performer, and human being who I always take great delight in seeing, when she graces Adelaide with her presence. Her immersive storytelling show is appropriate for anyone with sensory, or audiology issues, as her soothing, calm, voice will guide you through a whimsical world, and her beautiful, singing voice will calm your soul. A truly immersive experience. We wore headphones? with our eyes, closed for the duration. Scents, and sounds were utilised, to evoke memories, and emotions.

Talking to Carmel after the show, she even asked me if she could be doing anything better for disability access, (which she absolutely did not!) Her space was safe, serene, and mobility accessible in all aspects. Overall I was incredibly impressed with both venue, and the performance on the evening. Unfortunately, ‘Journey to the Kingdom of Hypnos’, by Carmel Clavin, has now finished, but her highly successful interactive game adventure ‘Liminal’ is still running until 16 March. I urge anyone interested to book in, as she is such an intriguing individual, and immensely friendly!

Thank you, LIGHT ADL, and Carmel, for a fabulous, accessible evening! I thoroughly enjoyed myself! 🤍🤍

On Saturday 17th, at 4 pm, I was lucky enough to accept an invitation to the opening of ACE OPEN’s, ‘Yucky’ exhibition. A disabled lead, and curated exhibition that made me cry, grin with elation, laugh with joy, feel intense anger at injustice, and to not only bump into many mutual, disabled artist friends, but to meet new, fabulous ones!

ACCESS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

ACE OPEN (Adelaide Contemporary Experimental) do access in an absolutely impeccable manner. This exhibition, of course, was tantamount to have the best disability access.
Wheelchair accessible on street level, a wide ramp leads to the entrance. Doorways were opened for ease of guests entry. A wheelchair accessible bathroom was located at street level, below the exhibition space.
Noise in the gallery was at very minimum levels, however, good friends, DJ’s Joshua Campton, and Lorcan Hopper, performed a DJ set after the Welcome to Country, and speeches from ‘Yucky’ curator, Sam Petersen, andDirector of The Adelaide Festival, Ruth McKenzie CBE.

I feel so incredibly blessed to have had the honour to experience such a powerful exhibition,

Thank you so very much, to all involved. An amazing day of strength, ferocity, bolshiness, crip camaraderie, and ally-ship.
🤍
THIS makes me PROUD to be part of a DISABLED KINSHIP. 🤍🤍

🍷PARLAMENTO 🍷

ACCESS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Wheelchair accessible on street level, a manual door entrance, however, attentive staff are only too happy to assist you through the door. I booked this particular evening to ensure that the space inside was wheelchair accessible, and the front of house staff moved chairs, assisting me to fit my chair into space upon arrival. This may seem like a very simple gesture, but it’s amazing how many venues I have visited where I’ve had to wrestle chairs out the way of the table to squeeze my chair in, while wait staff watched on. I didn’t get to check out the situation with toilets, however, I highly doubt there was a wheelchair accessible bathroom in there. We arrived early (around 6 o’clock) Noise was at very minimum levels, with no music, however by 8 pm when we left, the place was bustling, and busy, and did get very loud inside. I would recommend those of you with auditory processing, or sensory issues to arrive early on a weekend, or, alternatively, seek out a table during the week. Over all, an excellent experience, access wise.

FOOD: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Food is very reasonably priced, for a venue that appears upmarket, classy, and very ‘old school Italian’ My mussels in a semidried tomato, and white wine broth were fresh. We shared a side of garlic broccolini, which was beautifully crunchy. My friends carbonara was ample, and needed to be ‘doggy-bagged’ as she couldn’t finish! Complimentary bread and butter was provided to the table. I enjoyed a crisp Clare Valley Sauvignon Blanc ($14.) Wines by the glass are reasonably priced. Staff were incredibly attentive. Food was amazing, with incredible speed in coming out of the kitchen! Decor classy, yet comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed this experience!
