Can’t lift your arm above your head anymore? Menopause may be part of the picture.
I’m seeing more and more women in their 40s, 50s and 60s struggling with painful, stiff shoulders.
Suddenly putting on a bra is difficult.
Reaching into a cupboard hurts.
Sleeping on that side is uncomfortable.
And eventually they realise they’ve lost a significant amount of movement in their shoulder.
Frozen shoulder is particularly common in women aged 40–60 — right around the time many women are navigating perimenopause and menopause.
And from an Ayurvedic perspective, that timing is interesting.
As women move through this stage of life, Vata naturally becomes more influential.
Vata has dry, cold and mobile qualities. When aggravated, we can begin to see the opposite of healthy movement — dryness, stiffness, pain and restriction.
Then add poor sleep, stress, overwork, irregular routines and the hormonal changes occurring through menopause.
Suddenly, that shoulder isn’t necessarily something we want to look at in isolation.
Ayurveda asks:
What is happening in the whole woman that may be contributing to what we’re seeing in the joint?
Because two women can both have frozen shoulder and need very different support.
If you’re navigating menopause AND noticing increasing shoulder pain, stiffness or loss of movement, perhaps it’s time to look beyond the shoulder.
