This week the HSU SA/NT was reporting to the ABC News about a shortage of Allied Health Professionals in Youth and Community Mental Health.

NT Health has been sitting on this information for nearly 3 years and has taken no action.

The report has been made public under an FOI request.

The Psychology Board of Australia’s proposed changes to psychology education pathways are deeply concerning.

At a time when mental health services are already stretched, the answer cannot be to lower the standard of education and training for future psychologists.

Reducing the qualification standard risks leaving new psychologists with less training, less knowledge and lower pay — and that is bad for workers, bad for the profession and bad for the community.

The SA Psychologists Association, a sub-branch of the HSU SA/NT, is strongly opposed to this proposal.

We need reform that strengthens psychology, not reform that cuts corners.

The Fair Work Commission has increased Award wages by 4.75% from 1 July.

If you’re paid Award rates, you’re getting a pay rise.

If you’re on an Enterprise Agreement, it’s time to for us to ask your employer whether they will pass the increase on.

Award wages don’t increase by accident. Union members advocate for them.

HSU delegates in the Territory had the opportunity today to speak with Selena Uibo: Member for Arnhem about Allied Health and the growing crisis facing our health services.

A big thank you to Selena for taking the time to listen and discuss our concerns regarding the recent budget cuts to NT Health and the impact they are having on workers, patients, and the broader community.

Today, Allied Health professionals across every major hospital in the Northern Territory walked off the job, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with United Workers Union members in protest against the NT Government’s latest Enterprise Agreement offer.

From January 2025 to January 2026, Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro MLA has awarded herself and all Territory politicians an 8% pay rise.
In the same period, Allied Health workers are being offered just 3%.

This is a clear double standard.

Allied Health professionals are essential. They reduce hospital stays, help Territorians recover faster, and keep people out of hospital for longer. We need more of them—now, and into the future.

But this EA offer will push NT wages even further behind the rest of Australia, making it almost impossible to attract and retain the skilled workforce needed to keep our health system running safely and effectively.

Today’s action sends a simple message:

It’s time to respect Allied Health. ✊

✅ HSU Members Have Spoken – A Clear Win for Allied Health!

Today’s General NTPS Agreement ballot result sends a powerful message: the workforce does not support the current offer. Allied Health professionals have stood together and said loud and clear – we deserve better.

This is not just about pay. It’s about respect, recognition, and the future of essential health services in the Territory. Members have campaigned tirelessly to highlight the real issues: attraction and retention challenges, rising costs of professional registration, non-competitive wages, and the urgent need to protect safe and continuous Allied Health services.

The result is a call to action. We are ready to work with OCPE to reach a fair and sustainable agreement quickly. Territorians deserve strong, well-supported health services – and that starts with valuing the people who deliver them.

Our campaign has always been about one thing: Respect Allied Health. Today’s result proves that message is stronger than ever.
