Not every child needs the same kind of brain break. 🎲

Roll the dice, find the number, then choose: does your body need more energy or less energy right now?

A simple way to build body awareness, choice and readiness for learning—without expecting every student to regulate in the same way.

Sometimes a quiet “calming” activity is too low to engage a child—but a high-energy brain break can wind them up even more.

That’s where rhythm can help. Music provides enough interest to engage, while a steady, predictable beat helps organise movement through pack-up, transitions or a short brain break. 🎵

The goal isn’t stillness. It’s finding the right level of energy for the next step.

Sometimes children haven’t learnt what to do when the routine changes. 💛

With gentle modelling, encouragement and practice, flexible thinking can grow.

Sometimes it isn’t refusal—it’s a brain struggling to activate, stop one task and shift into another. A clear first step, a visual cue and a little transition time can make starting and switching much easier.

This is always easier to remember when things are calm. In the moment, it’s hard. 💛

So keep it simple: lower your voice, slow your body, use fewer words.

Regulation first. Teaching next.

Regulation doesn’t always have to happen alone. 💛

For some kids, connection can feel scary too — especially when it involves talking, eye contact or unexpected touch.

That’s why connection can start small.

Shared movement.
A predictable rhythm.
Working alongside someone.
A little pressure — when chosen.

No big conversation required.

Move. Connect. Reset.
And always: try it, change it or stop it.

Connection isn’t something we force. It’s something we make safe enough to choose.

When a child is in crisis, our nervous system walks into the moment too.

That’s why regulation plans aren’t just for kids. Adults need a plan for the moments when our heart rate rises, our thinking narrows and the situation starts pulling us in.

Know your pause.
Know your backup.
Know what helps you stay steady.

Because sometimes the most important regulation strategy in the room is the adult having a plan. đź’›
