Did you know that Nurse Practitioners are autonomous clinicians?

Nurse Practitioners can assess, diagnose, treat, prescribe, refer to specialists, and provide ongoing care independently within our scope of practice.

Many referrals, diagnostics, and Medicare-funded services still require a doctor’s signature in Australia. This is not because Nurse Practitioners are not trained or qualified, but because of current healthcare system and Medicare limitations.

Nurse Practitioners continue to undertake advanced education, ongoing training, and evidence-based practice to provide safe and high-quality patient care.

Healthcare works best when every healthcare professional is recognised and supported to work to their full potential.

Did you know?

Nurse Practitioners in Australia can provide a wide range of healthcare services through telehealth, including assessment, prescribing, referrals, medical certificates, care planning, and ongoing chronic disease management.

For Medicare-subsidised telehealth appointments, patients generally need to have had a face-to-face appointment with the practitioner or another clinician from the same practice within the last 12 months.

There are important exceptions, including:
• Children under 12 months old
• People experiencing homelessness
• Patients affected by natural disasters
• Some sexual and reproductive health consultations

If you are registered with your regular healthcare practice through MyMedicare, access to telehealth services may be more flexible.

Telehealth with a Nurse Practitioner can help improve access to healthcare, especially for people with busy schedules, mobility challenges, rural living, or difficulty attending clinics in person.

It is also important to understand that not all Nurse Practitioner services are fully covered by Medicare. While some Medicare rebates are available, many Nurse Practitioners do not bulk bill due to the limited Medicare funding currently available for NP services in Australia.

This means patients may still have an out-of-pocket cost, similar to many other private healthcare services.

If you are unsure about your eligibility or fees, speak with your healthcare provider to discuss your options.

Weight loss medications such as GLP-1 therapies have been life changing for many people living with obesity and chronic health conditions. Like all medications, they come with benefits, side effects, and risks that need careful monitoring and support.

Rapid weight loss without maintaining or building muscle can lead to significant muscle loss, which may increase the risk of metabolic complications, frailty, falls, and poorer long-term health outcomes. Weight loss should never just focus on the number on the scale. Protecting muscle through adequate protein intake, resistance exercise, and appropriate medical guidance is just as important.

A healthy journey is not simply about getting smaller. It is about getting stronger, healthier, and more functional for the long term.

Talk to your healthcare provider about safe and sustainable weight management.

What is myosteatosis?

Myosteatosis is a condition where fat builds up inside the muscles, reducing muscle quality and strength over time. It can affect both men and women and becomes more common with ageing, inactivity, obesity, hormonal changes, insulin resistance, chronic illness, and poor nutrition.

Many people notice symptoms gradually:
• Loss of strength
• Fatigue
• Difficulty exercising
• Increased falls or injuries
• Slower recovery
• Weight gain despite muscle loss

Women may notice this more around perimenopause and menopause due to hormonal decline, while men can experience it with reduced testosterone levels, sedentary lifestyle, and metabolic changes.

The good news is that muscle decline is not inevitable.

Ways to help protect muscle health:
• Regular resistance or strength training
• Adequate protein intake
• Maintaining healthy vitamin D levels
• Managing weight, diabetes, and inflammation
• Prioritising sleep and recovery
• Staying physically active as we age

Muscle is one of the body’s most important organs for longevity, balance, metabolism, and independence. Looking after it early can help reduce future complications and improve quality of life.

If you are concerned about muscle loss, fatigue, weight changes, or healthy ageing, speak with your healthcare practitioner for assessment and support.

Menopause is more than hot flushes. Hormonal changes can affect the entire body, often in ways women do not expect.

As estrogen levels decline, women may experience:
• Loss of bone density and increased fracture risk
• Changes in cholesterol, blood pressure, weight distribution, and heart health
• Vaginal dryness, bladder symptoms, and changes in sexual health
• Mood changes, brain fog, poor sleep, anxiety, and reduced concentration

Many women are told to “just put up with it,” but support and treatment options are available.

At Kapwa Clinic we believe women deserve to feel heard, informed, and supported through every stage of perimenopause and menopause. A thorough assessment with a Nurse Practitioner can help guide personalised care, lifestyle strategies, and hormone discussions where appropriate.

You are not “just getting older.” Your symptoms matter.

Perimenopause is more than just hot flushes. Many women experience brain fog, anxiety, poor sleep, low energy, reduced confidence, decreased libido, muscle loss and feeling “not quite themselves” long before menopause officially arrives.

Testosterone is not just a male hormone. Women naturally produce testosterone too, and declining levels during perimenopause and menopause may contribute to low libido, reduced motivation, fatigue and changes in wellbeing.

Evidence-based hormone care, including testosterone replacement in selected women, is becoming an important part of the conversation in women’s health. Women are not “broken” and they deserve to be heard, assessed properly and offered informed choices.

Planning a relaxing holiday soon?

Massage. Cocktails. Dancing. Spa days. Sunshine. Late nights. The perfect escape.

But before you jet off, don’t leave your antiwrinkle or facial filler treatments until the last minute.

Many people don’t realise that timing matters when it comes to cosmetic treatments and travel.

Here are a few important things to know:

• Full body massages and facials are best avoided for at least 2 weeks after facial fillers, especially treatments where you are lying face down

• Flying within 48 hours of filler treatment is discouraged due to swelling and pressure changes

• Alcohol is best avoided for around 48 hours before and after treatment as it can increase bruising and swelling

• If any small tweaks or refinements are needed, allowing 10–14 days before your holiday gives everything time to settle beautifully

The best cosmetic results happen when treatments are planned, not rushed.

Speak with your clinician early, organise your appointments ahead of time, and give yourself the opportunity to heal properly before you relax and enjoy your holiday.

Your face deserves the same planning as your flights and accommodation.

Okay but let’s be real for a second…

People think this is “I just woke up like this” 😄
Truth is, today on my Sunday off I woke up, cleaned the house, and then decided it was time for some proper self care.

Did my own prep, microneedling session, followed it up with some red LED therapy, had a little rest with my gorgeous pup of course, and voilà… slowly bringing the glow back ✨

Nothing fancy. Just consistency, knowing what your skin needs, and actually taking the time to do it.

Self care doesn’t have to be complicated, just intentional 💛

Grateful for the opportunity to visit the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology Region VI in Iloilo and meet the healthcare team caring for Persons Deprived of Liberty.

Conversations like these remind me that healthcare knowledge is meant to be shared. I was able to share some of my experience from correctional health in South Australia while learning from the dedicated practitioners working within this system.

Different countries, different systems, but the same goal. Healthcare is universal.
