If you wake at almost exactly the same time every night — often around 3am — and lie there wide awake, it's worth knowing what's usually behind it.
It's frequently not your bladder, and it's not random. A common driver is blood sugar: if glucose dips too low overnight, the body releases cortisol and adrenaline to bring it back up. That surge is alerting by design — so you wake, often feeling wired or strangely hungry.
Clues it's metabolic rather than coincidence: it happens at a predictable time, you struggle to fall back asleep, and it's worse after alcohol or a very low-carb dinner.
The fix usually isn't a sleep tablet. It's stabilising blood sugar across the whole day, and eating something before bed. The 3am wake is a daytime problem showing up at night.
Do you wake at a consistent time most nights?
