30 Chowringhee Road
Chowringhee Mansions
This is 30 Chowringhee Road. As known in a 1874 Directory, this number at Park Street crossing on the northside, where now Chowringhee Mansion stands, there was United Service Club with JB Pitchall Secretary, then a club for the elite members of British India services. The membership was initially restricted only to ICS and Military Services and later opened to other Government officers including Europeans and Bengal Pilots. The club continued to operate here till around 1906.
In 1907 the current building with about 8,500 square feet area was built by property developer David Joseph Ezra and the builder was Mackintosh Burn & Co. Further, as in the 1918 Thackers India Directory, it had 4 floors in 4 blocks with 24 apartments, 2 in each block each floor in the upper three floors with a long list of occupants, all British or European names except an Indian merchant Khan Bahadur Haji Ismail Sait in the entire floor, apartment 21 & 22 on the second floor of Block D. The ground had storefronts, occupied by New Egerton Woolen Mills Co. & The Cawnpore Cotton Mills Co. in Block A, Spence’s Ltd. & Swiss Embroidery Co. in Block B and AJ Smith & TA Wakefield Co. in Block C.
During 1940’s Christian Science Society was also housed here, besides a ladies’ Beauty Parlour Parisettes and a clinic of Dr. SR Chandra, FRCS.
Later, the building was given the status of Grade I Heritage Building by KMC because of its architectural design and no external look changes were allowed.
Currently, mostly occupied by offices like Inland Power, Phoenix Advertisement, Bengal Omnitech Nirman Ltd., Iconic Products Pvt. Ltd., Unimark Metallurgical Pvt. Ltd., The Atlantic Oil Company Pvt. Ltd., Seeyok Tea Co. Pvt. Ltd., MACJ Services LLP, Waterfront Residency LLP, Inland Khatta Products Pvt. Ltd., etc. Also there is a cozy cafe Kulture on the 3rd floor with stunning view of Maidan.
