So here's something I keep noticing. The desire to change can feel heavy. Especially when the body has slowed down and everything feels like effort.

But no matter where you are in life, free will always exists. That's not a spiritual concept. That's actually how your nervous system works.

When you're stuck in a low state, the unconscious mind holds onto the patterns that keep it there. Sadness, disappointment, even that voice telling you it's just the way things are.

Here's the thing though. Work with the conscious mind, and the unconscious follows. Those negative emotions, the ones that feel so tangled and permanent, they're interconnected. But they can be let go. Rapidly. Easily.

And then there's the belief that keeps so many people trapped. The idea that it's simply a chemical imbalance. Like your brain just got dealt a bad hand and that's that.

I wonder if you can remember a time when your thoughts shifted something. Because if your neurology changes, the chemicals in your brain change too. That's not speculation. That's biology.

Your brain is not a fixed organ. It responds to what you feed it, what you tell it, what you let go of. When the mind shifts, the entire system finds a new balance.

Back to your scheduled program.

So you got caught out. Maybe you had everything in place. The movement was there, the healthy habits, the routine. And still, depression found a way in. Or perhaps you look back and see the gaps now. The energy wasn’t being brought in. The body was still. You were running on empty and didn’t even realise it.

But here is what I have come to understand. The past does not have to keep replaying in the present. Negative emotions are not stored in some permanent vault. They live in the body. They live in the nervous system. And they respond to something far deeper than willpower.

I wonder if you have ever felt that weight lift unexpectedly. That moment when something shifts and you are not quite sure how. That is not magic. That is your unconscious mind finally getting the message that it is safe to let go.

Because here is the truth. The emotion itself is just energy. A signal from a moment that has already passed. And when the body no longer needs to protect you from it, it can dissolve. Essentially instantaneously. If you have the willingness to explore what is actually underneath.

So yes, there are ways out. Not by fighting the feeling. Not by forcing positivity. But by allowing the body and mind to realign with what is true right now. Not what was true then.

The science points to it. The ancient wisdom knew it. And your system is ready for it whenever you are.

Disappointment has a way of sneaking up on us. It doesn’t announce itself. It just arrives, often right when we thought we had things under control.

And here is the paradox. We want to keep our expectations high because that’s part of staying hopeful, ambitious, aligned with what we want. But the higher we reach, the further the fall feels when life doesn’t quite match the picture in our minds.

So we tighten up. We tell ourselves to expect less so it hurts less. And on the surface that feels safer. But lowering the bar too much is its own kind of loss. It shrinks your world before life even gets a chance to offer you something bigger.

What if the answer isn’t in managing your expectations, but in how you hold them? The mind can aim high and stay grounded at the same time. That’s not a contradiction. That’s a skill.

It comes down to the unconscious mind. When your expectations are tied to your identity, any shortfall feels like a verdict on you. But when the expectation is simply a direction, not a demand, the disappointment loses its grip. You stay in the game. You stay open.

This is where nervous system regulation matters too. Disappointment triggers a cascade of cortisol and a limbic response that makes everything feel more final than it is. It’s your body bracing, not your reality closing.

So maybe the practice is this. Keep the expectation high. Let it live fully. And build the internal neutrality to watch it unfold without making your worth the stakes of the outcome.

I wonder if you can hold both. The hope and the peace. The ambition and the acceptance. They aren’t enemies. They’re partners.

Disappointment is often the fuel behind depression. Not always, but more than we realise.

You might think the fix is lowering your expectations. Playing it safe. Expecting less so you feel less. But that doesn’t always work, and it can shrink your world in the process.

The body holds a lot of this. Your physiology is wired to your emotional state, and when stress hormones sit in the system for too long, low mood starts feeling like home. Polyvagal theory tells us that safety and connection are biological needs, not just nice ideas.

So what shifts the weight? Movement. Not as a punishment, not as a chore. Moving the body brings new energy in, changes the chemistry, and changes the message your nervous system is sending.

There’s an old saying that depression can’t hit a moving target. And there’s a lot of truth in that. When you’re in motion, even gently, you’re not a still object. You’re a shifting, breathing, evolving presence.

It’s not about forcing positivity. It’s about giving your body and unconscious mind a different pattern to anchor into. Small steps. A walk. A stretch. A change of scenery. The mind follows the body more than we give it credit for.

I wonder if you can remember a time when movement changed how you felt, even for a moment. The inner message was simply this. It isn’t all stuck. You aren’t all stuck.

Every problem you carry is doing a job for you. It has to be, otherwise you would have let it go by now.

This is what we call secondary gain. The hidden benefits to having a problem. And it is one of the most overlooked forces in human behaviour.

On some level, everyone has it. The part of you that gets something from staying stuck. Attention. Sympathy. A reason to not try. A shield from expectation. And none of that makes you wrong. It makes you human.

If you subscribe to being your most powerful and magnificent self, then you subscribe to cause and effect. We are the creators of our universe. Conscious creators, or unconscious creators. And the unconscious ones are the ones that run the show without your permission.

Secondary gain is an unconscious limiting decision. One that prevents you from being, doing, or having exactly what you want. The problem isn’t just the problem. The problem is the payoff you didn’t know you were collecting.

I worked with a client who had built a successful life. Financially thriving. And yet during the lockdowns he ended up with a rare heart condition. It robbed him of his independence. No driving. Barely working. Daily tasks became monumental. And somewhere along the line, a decision was made. He became so committed to showing people he was suffering that he became worse.

That is the power of the unconscious mind. It will always move toward what it believes is true, even if that truth is destroying you.

So I wonder. What is your problem doing for you? And what would happen if it no longer needed to?

Depression is not what we think it is. It is not a broken brain. It is not a chemical accident. At its root, it is a gap. The space between what you expected and what actually showed up. The shortfall between the story you told yourself and the reality you found yourself in.

That gap is not just psychological. It becomes neurological. It becomes physiological. The body responds to the absence. The nervous system reads unmet expectation as a threat. Cortisol rises. The limbic system tightens its grip. And your unconscious mind starts to agree with the disappointment. It believes the shortfall is who you are.

But here is the thing. Disappointment is made of expectation. And expectation is made of imagination. Which means the same machinery that creates the gap can create something else. Alignment. Ease. A nervous system that feels safe enough to let hope back in.

So I wonder if you can look at your own expectations. Not to judge them. Just to notice them. Because the gap you feel is not a measure of your worth. It is information. An inner message. And when you bring the unconscious mind into the conversation, the shortfall can begin to dissolve.

Retroactive jealousy is rarely about the other person. It is almost always about a story the unconscious mind is holding onto, a story that says something is missing or threatened within you.

When we trace that feeling back, past the images and the thoughts, we find the root. We find old unresolved emotions that are simply looking for somewhere to land.

Your mind will always project what it has not yet processed. That is not a flaw. That is a signal. And the great news is those signals can dissolve quite rapidly once the unconscious mind sees a new way forward.

No long drawn out digging through the past. No reliving the pain. Just a quiet meeting with the part of you still stuck there, and a gentle process of letting go at the level where it all got stored.

The relief is sustainable because the change is happening below the surface. At the level where the belief was originally formed.

I wonder if you have felt that. The moment a big reaction suddenly has no charge. The story is still there, but the weight is gone. That is what is possible.

The mind doesn’t always react to what’s happening now. Sometimes it reacts to a memory the body never forgot.

Retroactive jealousy can feel intensely present. The fixation loops. The rumination feels impossible to break. But the trigger is rarely the person or the imagined event. The trigger is older. It often comes from the imprint period, between the ages of one and seven. A moment when you didn’t receive the attention you needed. A feeling of being overlooked, not chosen, not enough.

That experience lives in the unconscious mind and in the nervous system. Years later a thought, a picture, a story about someone from your partner’s past activates it. Suddenly the limbic system sounds the alarm. Cortisol rises. The body reacts as if the original wound is happening again.

But it isn’t. The original wound already happened. What’s repeating is the inner message that said you weren’t enough.

That message can change. It can be met with awareness, with neutrality, with a felt sense of safety in the body. Hypnosis and NLP work with this directly. Not by forcing logic onto the feeling, but by allowing the unconscious mind to update its interpretation.

I wonder if you can feel the difference between past and present in a memory. The past is complete. The present is where new experience becomes possible. When the nervous system settles, the fixation loses its charge. What’s left is not a threat. Just a wound that was waiting to be seen.

You know how it goes. High performers, the ones who seem to have it all together, often have the messiest inner world. They’re winning at work, but struggling with habits they can’t break. Drinking. Smoking. Overeating. And they think it’s a discipline problem. So they try harder. They shame themselves. They make promises they can’t keep. But here’s what I see. It’s not a willpower issue. It’s a nervous system issue. When your body is stuck in a chronic stress response, it craves things that bring temporary relief. That’s not weakness. That’s survival. So you reach for the bottle, the cigarette, the food. Not because you’re broken. Because you’re trying to self-soothe. The real shift happens when you re-regulate that nervous system. When your body feels safe, the cravings lose their grip. The habits fall away. Not through force. Through alignment. And that’s when problems you thought were permanent start to dissolve. I wonder if you’ve ever blamed yourself for something that was actually your system just trying to cope.
