Let's Shine

Let's Shine When the final curtain fell, it was realised that the production had resulted in a huge personal reward for all involved.

'Let’s Shine' is for All-ability performers, a series of productions, activities, projects, and dance workshops that bring together people living with a disability, ALOTCo members, and collaborating performing groups. History
The idea of ‘Let's Shine' series was conceived over 20 years ago by the current director/coordinator Janet McArtney and then Director Margaret Evans as both had a connection

with people living with disabilities is via either: work, volunteering and has a family member... understood how therapeutic music is so to people living with barriers in their life. Janet teamed up with the experience of long-time director Margaret Evans (4 productions) and with the full support of the committee, co-directed the first production in ‘Let’s Shine’ in October 1998. Being a part of these wonderful productions, we have all developed a greater appreciation and understanding of living life with a disability and we have been so impressed by the hidden talents that have been discovered and by the guest stars’ enthusiasm. Since then, ALOTCo have had:

2009 - ‘Let’s Shine Again'
2014 - ‘Let’s Shine Forever’, which won the ‘City of Albany Australia Day Event of the Year.’
2017 - ‘Let’s Shine Together’
2019 - ‘Let’s Shine Brightly’ with a new co-director Jill Larsen (as Margaret has moved to Perth)
'Lets Shine' continued to be involved in other projects outside the theatre with Carers WA (2019/20 video and book).
2021 - Breaksea Festival 'View from the Magpies Nest' a collaboration with Breaksea.org whereby 'Lets Shine' members wrote, choreographed, danced and acted this production on the main stage at the Albany Entertainment Centre.
2022 - Breaksea Festival 'Seachange’ another collaboration with Breaksea.org whereby 'Lets Shine' members choreographed and danced (4 workshops) for an Open Day at the Albany Entertainment Centre.
2022 - Performed at the ‘Great Southern Ability Festival’ and ‘Albany Ability Festival’
2023 - Breaksea & Maritime Festival a dance collaboration 'The Magical Weedy Seadragon' with 3 performances at the Albany Entertainment Centre.
2023 - Performed at the ‘Great Southern Ability Festival’ & ‘Binalup Australia Day Festival’
2024 - Breaksea - ‘Side by Side’, a dance collaboration 'Constellations' a 4 min dance as part of’ Thunderstorm (Malkar) ‘with performances on the main stage at the Albany Entertainment Centre.
2025 - Breaksea - New Years Eve film collaboration with line dancing to a song written by past member Evan Ayres. Let’s Shine Director Janet McArtney (involved since 1998)

Just a little late posting.

Here's Jodie, Trevor, Janet and Jess who made it to the special screening of:

💫 Relive The Films: Kaya 2026 💫
On New Years' Eve The City of Albany and Breaksea presented Kaya 2026, combining live performance with a series of cinematic pieces developed with Menang Elders, local artists and musicians. These works explore story, language and connection to Country, featuring original compositions, community participation and voices from across the region.
The screening includes all the music videos for original works including Kinjarling and Koolangka by Gina Williams and the late Guy Ghouse, cinematic storytelling with Menang Elders on Country, and more.

We were so excited to Let's Shine us and Albany Port Theatre on the BIG screen.

This week is National Volunteer Week and Albany & Regional Volunteer Service honoured volunteer groups and individuals at an awards ceremony last night. A wonderful night to reflect on the value of volunteer and network.

Albany Light Opera & Theatre Company was well represented, with Lets Shine nominated as a volunteer group and performing the opening line dance to the song “Blue Water”, written by past ALOTCo member Evan Ayres Music and Flood the Moon. Thankyou breaksea.org The 11 of us range from ages in their 20' to mid 70's, Jess, Emily, Linda, Jodie, Naomi, Karra, Rilee, Deb, Kaleisha and Janet enjoyed the opportunity to show off.

We also had Kevin McCreton as MC and Hardy Croucher performing stand-up comedy, we are proud to say are part of ALOTCo.

Congratulations to all nominees and the well-deserved winners, Albany Community Hospice and Andrew Eyden.- Albany Historical Society.

Thankyou to Sarah, Christine and the board of ARVS for such a wonderful event.

More photos of our dancers to come.

Thankyou Kevin for reading this out.
Let’s Shine, is an all-abilities performing group proudly supported by the Albany Light Opera and Theatre Company and rehearse at the Albany Port Theatre.
Let’s Shine provides a safe and supportive environment where people can express themselves through performance, music, dance and creativity.
We began back in 1998 and since then have presented five major productions. One of those, Let’s Shine Forever in 2014, won the City of Albany Australia Day Awards ‘Event of the Year’.
Over the past five years, we’ve also collaborated annually with Breaksea Productions in integrated productions, usually performed at the Albany Entertainment Centre.
Last year, we were part of a special project where we were filmed line dancing to the song Blue Water, written by local singer and past Light Opera member Evan Ayres. The film also involved other local performers, was screened at the ‘Kaya New Year’s Eve’ celebrations.
Today we are excited to perform Blue Water for you. While we have a smaller group with us today than our usual 20 performers, we are very proud to share this performance with you. Unfortunately, our five wheelchair dancers couldn’t join us today, but they are very much part of the Let’s Shine family and spirit.
