Remote Vocational Training Scheme - RVTS

Remote Vocational Training Scheme - RVTS Training and retaining doctors in Australian communities.

RVTS is a distance education program for GP registrars in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and rural & remote communities across Australia. The endpoint is GP Fellowship (FACRRM and/or FRACGP/FARGP) & vocational recognition with Medicare Australia.

One of the most powerful parts of RVTS training is that doctors stay in their community while they train.

That means building long-term relationships with patients, becoming part of local life, and providing continuity of care for the people who rely on them.

For many registrars, RVTS also means stability for their families. No moving every few months. No leaving the community they’ve already become part of. Just supported, flexible training in the place they call home.

RVTS helps train and retain doctors in rural, remote and First Nations communities, supporting stronger healthcare access and more stable medical workforces across Australia.

Stay in your community while you train. Become part of something bigger.

National Reconciliation Week is a time to reflect on our shared histories, relationships and futures, and to consider the role each of us plays in moving reconciliation forward.

At RVTS, we recognise the importance of listening, learning and continuing to strengthen culturally safe practice in the work we do across rural, remote and Aboriginal Medical Service settings.

We are committed to supporting doctors, communities and culturally informed healthcare through ongoing learning, connection and respect.

This week, we acknowledge the importance of truth-telling, partnership and action in creating a more equitable future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Working in an Aboriginal Medical Service is unlike any other setting in general practice.

It’s not just about treating patients. It’s about understanding community, building trust over time, and delivering care that reflects culture, connection and lived experience.

Through the RVTS AMS Stream, doctors can train toward Fellowship while continuing to work within Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services — supported by remote supervision, structured education and dedicated cultural mentoring.

Stay in one location for the duration of training and enjoy the benefits of building relationships and delivering continuity of care over years.

For many doctors, it’s one of the most meaningful ways to practice.
