Researchers developed a lime EO mouthwash and found that a formulation containing 0.8% EO showed strong antibacterial activity against several bacteria associated with cavities, gingivitis, and oral infections, including S. mutans and P. gingivalis. In a preclinical model, the mouthwash also reduced gum inflammation and lowered inflammatory cell counts, suggesting it may help support healing of gingivitis. Importantly, the formulation met standard mouthwash quality requirements and was found to be non-toxic to normal fibroblast cells at practical use concentrations. The researchers concluded that lime essential oil has potential as a safe, natural alternative to conventional mouthwashes for helping prevent dental caries and gum disease, although human clinical studies are still needed to confirm these benefits.

A study examined whether green myrtle (alpha-pinene CT) EO could help protect s***m from damage caused by bisphenol A (BPA), a common chemical found in plastics that has been linked to fertility problems. In laboratory tests, BPA reduced s***m motility and viability, increased oxidative stress, disrupted membrane lipids, and altered important amino acids involved in s***m function. Low to moderate doses of myrtle essential oil largely reversed these effects, restoring antioxidant defenses, preserving s***m cell membranes, improving s***m movement and survival, and reducing the amount of BPA retained inside the cells. However, the highest dose of the oil appeared to have harmful effects of its own, highlighting the importance of proper dosing. The researchers concluded that myrtle essential oil shows promise as a natural approach for protecting male reproductive health from BPA-related damage, although these findings come from an in vitro study and still need confirmation human trials.

Evaluation of a gel made from cinnamon EO and aloe vera showed that the combination not only inhibited the growth of two common wound-infecting bacteria (P. aeruginosa and S. aureus), but also significantly improved wound healing in diabetic subjects in a preclinical model. After 14 days, wounds treated with the combination gel showed substantially greater closure, higher collagen production, stronger antioxidant activity, and lower levels of oxidative stress compared to untreated wounds. The treated wounds also had higher hydroxyproline levels—a marker of new collagen formation—and healthier tissue structure on microscopic examination. The researchers concluded that combining cinnamon EO and aloe vera may offer a promising natural approach for both controlling wound infections and accelerating tissue repair, although human clinical studies are still needed to confirm these results.

A study compared several common Apiaceae EOs and found that coriander essential oil showed the strongest anti-aging activity in laboratory tests, outperforming fennel, anise, and cumin at inhibiting enzymes that contribute to wrinkles, loss of skin elasticity, and uneven pigmentation. Researchers then formulated the oil into both a cream and a nano-encapsulated topical product and tested them in mice with UV-induced skin aging. Both formulations reduced markers of oxidative stress and inflammation, lowered enzymes involved in collagen breakdown, and increased collagen levels in the skin, while also activating pathways associated with skin repair and regeneration. The authors concluded that coriander essential oil shows promise as a natural anti-aging skincare ingredient, although human clinical trials are still needed to confirm its effectiveness and safety.

We know that hospital stays can ruin your sleep, and poor sleep directly delays healing and recovery. But researchers wanted to see if a simple, natural solution could help.

A recent clinical trial followed 72 patients hospitalized in a cardiac care unit. Half of the group had 3 drops of geranium essential oil added to a gauze pad inside their pillowcases for three nights. The results? The geranium group experienced a significant boost in overall sleep quality compared to those who didn't use it! 🌸

Sometimes, the smallest changes make the biggest difference in healing.

Sometimes referred to as the king of oils, Frankincense is known to promote cellular health and immunity and can be consumed daily for these internal benefits. It promotes cellular health and DNA integrity for any lumps or bumps that your animal may have. Frankincense supports healthy function of the nervous system, immune system, and digestive tract. It helps soothe skin that is irritated, itchy or damaged, particularly when used in conjunction with lavender. It also relaxes and soothes sore muscles and joints in older animals.

From an emotional standpoint, Frankincense is the oil of truth and is quite helpful in rescue situations, particularly when an animal is un-trusting of certain people or if they have been “tricked” too many times. This oil is excellent to use in transitions such as adopting a new animal or if you are trying to build a stronger bond with your animal. It helps with feelings of abandonment and emotionally disconnected behavior. Frankincense promotes feelings of peace and trust.

Can you see why this is probably my favorite essential oil?

🐾 HOW TO USE FRANKINCENSE ESSENTIAL OIL WITH ANIMALS:

🐴 For horses and cattle, apply 4-6 drops along the spine from tail to head, over the poll, directly over the area of concern. You can give 2-5 drops twice daily with feed to give internally. (Optionally, you can dilute in a carrier oil for topical use to cover a larger area.)

🐶For dogs, dilute 1 drop in 20-50 drops of carrier oil (that is 4-6 drops in a 10 mL roller) and give one diluted drop internally mixed with food, or apply topically along the spine or directly over the area of concern or between the paw pads of the back feet. (Dilution for internal use is optional.)

🐱For cats, water diffusion is preferred. For topical application dilute 1-2 drops per 100 drops of carrier oil prior to applying to the area of concern or by petting along the spine (that is just 2-4 drops in a 10 mL roller).

🦜Frankincense is safe to diffuse around reptiles, birds, and small mammals as well.

When in doubt, get the Frankincense out!
