It's not that a child just simply refuses to go to school. It's that their body won't actually let them.

Once you understand what's actually happening inside their body and nervous system, everything starts to make sense.

For some children their nervous system is on high alert, expecting danger even when none is visible.

For others, it's sensory overwhelm, the noise, lights, smells and chaos of a school environment becoming too much.

Some children are dealing with social difficulties. It could be bullying, friendship struggles, feeling like they don't belong or the exhausting effort of masking to fit in.

Others are experiencing learning difficulties that make the classroom feel like a place of constant failure, shame and guilt.

What happens in those morning moments when children can't attend school is that their nervous system often goes into what we call a freeze or shutdown state.

That isn't defiance. That isn't refusal. That isn't misbehaviour. It's a nervous system doing everything it can to protect your child.

Understanding what's happening for your child is the first step toward School Can instead of School Can't.

πŸ’š Reach out today and let's work together to help your child feel safe again.

Language shapes how we understand and respond to our children.

Let’s look at the term School Refusal which is used to describe children who are struggling to attend school. I want to challenge this term because I don't believe it tells the whole truth.

Refusal implies choice. It implies defiance. It implies a child who is simply being difficult or stubborn.

In my work with children and families, what I see is rarely a child who is just choosing not to go to school. What I see is a child who genuinely CAN'T.

This is why I'm in full support of the shift from the term School Refusal to School Can't.

When a child's body and nervous system are in survival mode, going to school isn't a matter of willpower. It's not about better discipline or firmer consequences. It's about a child whose stress response has taken over, making school attendance feel impossible.

With the right support, understanding and strategies, school can become possible again.

If your child is struggling with school attendance, please know this isn't about bad parenting or a defiant child. This is a child whose nervous system needs support.

We can't give our children back their childhood without first taking back what belongs to us as adults.

Is your child carrying emotional weight that isn't theirs?

They didn't pick that up on their own.

Somewhere along the way, consciously or unconsciously, we handed it to them or they saw it lying around and picked it up because that's what many children do.

The only way to free them is for us to take it back. When parents are willing to take back their own emotional responsibility, everything shifts.

Are you ready to take back what belongs to you?

Are you prepared to look honestly at what your child has been carrying for you?

Are you prepared to do the work, the uncomfortable, sometimes painful work of facing what belongs to you, so that your child can be freed from it?

If the answer is yes, I'm here. Let's do this together.

When was the last time your child got to just be a kid?

Not worrying about adult problems. Not trying to keep everyone happy. Not managing your mood. Not being wrapped up in being the good kid or the helpful kid all the time.

Just playing. Learning. Growing. Making mistakes. Getting messy. Feeling their feelings without having to fix adult feelings.

Being themselves.

We need to give our children back what they deserve, the freedom to just be kids.

To be children without adult responsibilities. To only see what they need to see as children. To be free from carrying what was never theirs to carry.

We give them back their childhood by taking back what belongs to us as adults. By letting them put down the weight they were never meant to hold.

If you're seeing your child carry weight that isn't theirs, I'm here to help lighten that load.

In a previous post I asked to take a seat in your child's world and to consider,

What are they seeing?
What are they making their responsibility?

Here is one common thing I'm seeing in the majority of child sessions πŸ‘‡

Children are taking on adult emotional responsibilities that were never meant to be theirs.

This is what it can actually look like.

The 8 year old who tiptoes around the house, stays quiet and unseen, monitoring Mum's mood, trying to keep her happy because mum has been sad since the divorce.

The 10 year old who feels responsible for stopping their parents' arguments, believing that if they were better behaved, then their parents wouldn't fight.

The 12 year old trying to parent their younger siblings because they can see their parents are stressed and overwhelmed.

The child who's stopped asking for what they need because they've learnt that adults have too much going on already and life is hard.

Here's what I am very honest about with parents.

Your child's job is not to manage your emotions, fix your stress, keep you happy, be your therapist or sacrifice their own needs to make your life easier/happier/less stressful.

This can be confronting for some but I say this with deep compassion because I know parenting can be challenging. Life is challenging. Sometimes we're barely keeping our heads above water. All while our children are watching.

Sensitive, empathetic children? They're not just watching, they're absorbing, internalising and trying to fix. They're taking on adult responsibilities.

If you're recognising your child in this post, please know you're not failing as a parent. Awareness is the first step. Many of us unconsciously recreate patterns from our own childhoods. The beautiful thing is that once you see it, you can change it.

If this resonates and you are ready for an honest, heartfelt conversation, I'm here.
